What do you guys think of the speedmaster bare aluminum heads

That they sell?

Like this one for example, though some are listed much cheaper.

they have a mixed review. Yeah, they are chinese castings as well. Some QA concerns but if you have them checked out by a good machine shop, you'll probably be alright. Don't expect huge flow numbers either. They are, from some of the flow numbers posted, essentially just an aluminum casting of a stock X head, maybe a tad better.

What all did you do to them to make them usable?
They were done by MLR. I know, haters have come out of the wood work against him, but I’m happy with them.
2.05/1.60 valves surfaced just to make sure they were flat. New guides and what ever “magic” he said he did on the chambers to make them right.

they say pushrod oiling but pics show head drilled for rocker oiling?

A while back I tried to get a set drilled for T/A rockers and they said they couldn't do that? I just can't see why anyone would go through the trouble of making a aluminum casting and not fix the problem areas!

It looks like they are just "aluminum heads" nothing more. I would like to see some ported and how much material is available for some nice work. Closed chambers can be found on some numbers of iron heads so unless you have domed pistons to take advantage of the compression without detonation issues they are simply aluminum heads. May be I should buy one, send to R&J for some work and have it copied..

RHS INDY LAX heads, magnum heads, 302 heads -what are you talking about?
LA engines need modified (magnum) or over a thousand dollars to run RHS heads.

As I understand it, the edelbrock air gap intake has to be utilized work with front accessories with the magnum conversion (vice the Chinese air gap intake, or the magnum repop heads 318B? 318A?).

The 302 heads need porting enough $ to justify new heads.

Brandwise same as the procomp brand just renamed. Bought a cast iron set for sbf and had to replace guides and replace exhaust seats as wrong size were installed. Stated 1.6 but were 1.54, ran good after that.

They are bare, aluminum and Speedmaster (formerly ProComp) and cheap. That's about all I think or know.

Like any aluminum head, you need to have it checked out and probably corrected by a competent machine shop. Since you have to do that with any aluminum head, why not get the cheapest one, right?

My friend whose a local head porter in Warner Robins likes them. He says the castings are very high quality.

Did you ever pull the trigger on them?
I bought 2 sets of the bare, Chinese (Speedmaster formally pro comp) aluminum cylinder heads-for less expensive than half price of new heads assembled. $3XX something a piece.

I got valve jobs, valves, springs, ?seats, retainers, valve seals, guides checked for $500 something bucks (less than $550 I think) installed.

I am unpacking from my retirement move and working hap hazzardly now-no assembly as of yet.

Do you want pics? @j par

Are they still holding up well?
Yes, no problems at all.
They were done by MRL. As I recall the did some kind of secret clean up on them to make them flow and mine have 2.08/1.60 valves in them, can't recall what springs or pressures, would have to dig though my notes at home.

Thank you....

I started a thread in The Race part of the forum trying to get more information and feedback on them. It's nice to hear some longevity feedback as well? Like take a licking and keep on ticking kind of stuff is what I'm hoping for?....

2.08 intake valves ? That's not a secret, that's a big *** valve is all that is.
Well, yeah..but way back when he was building and these heads came out he talked about a clean up the of ports or something but didn’t want to give his “secret “ when someone asked what he was doing to them.

See post 28 in this thread. Earlier in the thread he talks about 2 critical areas.
