Axactly!A dyno should be a learning/testing tool, not a device to print out hp numbers to brag about. To bad the dyno shops have to give big numbers to sell dyno time.
I'd rather tell people I have 400hp and have a 11sec. slip, than tell people I've got 700hp, dyno proven! and then have to hide my 13second timeslip.
The track score board is your number !! Don’t care what a dyno says !! The track score board is the reality !!
In the years that I've been racing sanctioned tracks, & street racing when I was younger, I've never had an engine or a car on a dyno. I've only seen one dyno & that was 25 years ago.
If that were true, but it’s not.
Not sure what your point is. It’s a TOOL. If used correctly, you WILL make more power.
The dyno gets blamed for virtually everything under the sun, but a junk car, piss poor tuning, junk chassis, **** converters...none of that ever happens. Just that the dyno is worthless and junk because we don’t “race” them.
We don’t race torque wrenches either, but they are a tool.
Really enjoying the new book “Chrysler’s Motown Missile” and really like these couple of paragraphs. Dyno Schmyno, take it to the track and let’s see what ya got!

You are correct !! You make my point for me ! Thank you for explaining this to everyone. You are so right!! So take your car to the track an run it ! Running your car can make the dyno a liar ... your car may have a lot more horsepower than the dyno shows !! Or the track will show you don’t have as much as the dyno says !! Awesome response Sir !! I could not agree more !
So take your engine to the dyno, and get the numbers.
Stick it in a car, and go to the track.
The dyno says you made 500 HP.
The time slip says you made 410 HP.
Which one lied, and how do you know?

Oh boy, here we go again ……… LOL
My current engine was broke in and tuned on a dyno. It was the best money spent on the build, I’ve said that many times. A dyno is a comparative tool and a very good one.
There was an issue in my valve train that I wouldn’t have found in the car until much damage was done. Plus the tuning saved a bunch of beating on it at the drag strip. Once in the car a little jet adjustment and it was good.
I’m a firm believer that the time slip is where the rubber meets the road. Most guys that I know that spend the time and money to dyno a engine don’t put it in a junk car. It may take some tuning on the entire combo to make it work but that’s part of it.
How many times have we seen guys show off big numbers only to get their feelings hurt? Unfortunately there are engine builders and dyno shops who make money off inflated numbers.
My engine hasn’t ran the numbers the dyno said it should, it’s pretty close and I’m good with it. Because we used their ignition and dyno headers, with nothing driven off the crank. Plus, the day we ran it the air was great.
The shop owner is a engine builder and drag racer. After all the pulls were done he and I were talking about my car and I told him I was expecting 6.30’s out of it. I asked his opinion, he agreed if the car was right it should run what I was looking for. After much work two weeks ago it ran 6.33. Hell, it may go .20’s this fall. Great if it does but no big deal if it doesn’t as it’s met the goal I set when I started gathering parts.
All this and $1.75 will buy you a cup of coffee in some places.
The engine dyno will tell you how much POWER the ENGINE is producing. The time slip will tell you the TIME it took for THE CAR to go from point a to point b. Those are two different measurements. If you use a time slip to calculate the power being produced By THE CAR at the traps then it can be used to tell you how much power is lost between the engine and the wheels for that time duration.
Years ago (1975) my car club toured the Kieth Black facility. He had a Ford NASCAR engine on the dyno at the time. He stated that he was using the engine dynamometer to optimize THE ENGINE and that the car setup would be optimized once the engine was installed. He then had his assistant do a test run on the engine to show us the information that was obtained to help tune the engine.
LOL If you had 700 horse you would be spinning all the way down the track. No wonder why only 13 sec. Like the late model Challengers. (street cars) I laugh at them at the track.A dyno should be a learning/testing tool, not a device to print out hp numbers to brag about.
