Good morning, While im waiting for the 340 rebuild at the machine shop I thought i would send the 727 out to the tranny guy for a rebuild.
Im detailing this car pretty nice so i would like to clean up and paint the 727, my question is do i de-grease/sand/and paint it before i send it to the trany guy or after?
also any tips or recommendations are welcomed, thanks FABO...Rich

I'm not sure which would be better. I'll guess after the build. One thing I would do after prepping is to use an etching primer before painting for better adhesion and longevity.

can i set the tranny upright while i prep and paint?...or will that harm the tranny somehow?

Sure, but make sure that it is drained completely unless you prefer
red sneakers.

I clean the exterior before rebuilding it as it is much easier and neater
to work on.

They did not paint them from the factory although most racing trans builder
paint them (My ProTrans units are Gloss black).

X2 on priming trans (and engine) prior to painting = It makes a difference.

Thanks for all your help, I guess i will degrease it before i send it out and then paint it after the rebuild.

If you are set on painting it, I would actually talk to the builder first and let him know your plans. Degreasing, wire brushing, and scrubbing are all ok before the rebuild but you don't want it to sit around too long before disassembly and rebuild in case water gets inside and starts rusting the steel parts. Also, some builders use a parts washer after disassembly to quickly clean the parts. If they are going to run the case and tail housing through a parts washer you probably don't want it to have fresh paint on it as some may come off. They may let you take the case and tail housing for a good scrub after disassembly.

Painting after the rebuild is a good idea because as said above everything can be very clean after the rebuild, but then you'll need to do a careful clean and degrease again before paint. There is often finger prints or drips of trans fluid on the outside after handling the parts.

Finally, make sure to tape off any openings before painting. Don't really want paint on the inside.

while i got you guys here, can someone tell me what these numbers are...
PK 3515843L 3364 3349

3515843 - 1971 with 340 engine, 727 transmission
3364 build date October 13, 170

THANK YOU!!!!
From that number can you tell what model vehicle it came out of?

If it is pretty clean, it might make sense to leave it unpainted. It is so much easier to deal with when it has no paint. I had a Powerglide blasted with a softer media to brighten and clean it . Easy to do.
Also did the same thing to the 727 I used for all the book photos.

the last one I did (46 RE) I had to take a flapper wheel and carbide burr bit and clean up some of the gnarly casting.... I cut myself taking it out, hand slid along the housing as I slid it on the trans jack/ had a huge burr right along center down the whole front case. I cleaned up a few spots inside as well, while it was bare like the radius behind the pump right along in front of the front band... outside of tailshaft too. not a very showey vehicle (high mile durango) but had to for safety and so as not to cut my hands up on install.... I took it outside and power washed the snot out of it inside and out afterwards before building it back up

You are right Don about some of the flashing they leave on them. Very sharp and dangerous if you are not looking for it.

Price wise, it is not much more to blast one than the cost of three cans of stripper and your time and effort.
