Scott Weiland.

Alice Cooper, bar none and the talent speaks for itself.
Mick Jagger is a close second, without talent, but a great frontman nonetheless.
Iggy pop is a close third.
These guys just don't quit, and they still got it and always have.
James Brown is a close contender, but he's gone now.

Lot's of greats mentioned and nominated here and these guys might not be the best but I think they deserve a mention.....Robin Trower and Gene Simmons. My vote for the best? In his day....Mick Jagger. I never saw anyone better at getting a crowd going.
Mark

I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan open for Jeff Beck- then they played together.

Probably the best concert I have seen.

Rush is incredible- I don't know who would be considered the front man though.

Here is a question. What constitutes a "Great Frontman"?

There are names here that could play guitar and sing but when it comes to working the crowd some of these guys just don't cut it.

Stevie Ray was great as a player but the greatest front man?
I like KISS, great show but they are all gimics.
Bonn Scott was a wild one, he's there.
Hendrix? legendary guitarist but great front man?
Jim Morrison. If you are into the zombie look I guess.
Have never seen the Stones but I would give Mic the nod.
Alice Cooper is in. Oh yeah!
J. Hetfield is good but with out his long hair it's just not the same.
OZZY in due to him being OZZY.
DLR...Come on! Maybe pre 1980

I am not ragging your pics, it's just that some of these are a head scratcher. Have you actually seen these guys perform, either live or on DVD?

To me the front man is the show. Guitars, drums and keyboards are great additions but still need the front man to bring the show alive. I am not saying a great guitar player or drummer cant get you going(Angus Young, Keith Moon) but most just stand/sit there. Oh yeah dont forget Tommy Lee upside down.

Just my 2 cents guys.

This actually needs to be different catagories due to different styles.

But all in all ther should be able to sing.(This is where DL Roth gets dropped)

Has anybody mentioned Rob Halford? You now the gay guy from Judas Priest.(not that theres anything wrong with that)8)
His voice is one of the best.

Sorry for the rant DRENO. Carry on.

I dont agree that a good frontman is a clown. A good frontman wont take away from the rest of the band or the music.
Casting my vote for Ronny VanZant.

Deffinitally up there RedFish. He left us way to young and in his prime.

I wasn't meaning the front man needs to be a clown(Peter Gabriel). Its the ones who can entertain with out an instrument that stand out.

I think this is a subject that will have many views and oppinions.

But what does constitute a good front man?

I'm almost like Moto on this one, in that I'll get back to you.

The great ones pop into my mind right away: Daultry, Plant, Jagger, Hendrix, Van Zandt, Tyler.

But the music I listen to can be so ecclectic at times that guys like Randy Owen, from Alabama, come to mind.
Or Gary LeVox, from Rascal Flatts,
or Danny Shirley from Confederate Railroad.
Darius Rucker, then and now.
Dave Matthews.
Mac Powell of Third Day. His voice and lead fit the band to perfection.
Toby Mac and Michael Tait fit the bill from DC Talk, and Michael Tait fronting his own heavy metal band is right on.
Mark Hall, from Casting Crowns.
You also have Chuck D from Public Enemy. Ice Cube brought such an edge to NWA. When they forced him out, they lost their edge.

Like I said, too many categories to narrow them all down.

A lot of bands wouldn't have their recognition without the onstage antics of their front man, their clown. Just opinions... Carlos Santana deserves honorable mention.

I almost forgot about Steven Tyler. Very good. definate stage presence.

Maybe the issue at hand here is the "Rock n Roll" part.

What defines "rock and roll?" Seems to me everything these days is sort of an offshoot. Country these days is an example of what rock was twenty or thirty years ago. You have country musicians bouncing back and forth, and Darius Rucker can blend right into country music. Rap is always sampling rock for it's backgrounds.

Casting Crowns has a few songs in the Nickleback or 3 Doors Down sound. Third Day has a southern rock sound. With the blend of heavy metal/rap/ and pop there can be no doubt as to DC Talk.

Here's probably their best example:

listen to it and all the transititions in this song. Pop to rap and then to heavy metal.

Bon Scott, Bruce Dickinson,Rob Halford,The Boss,David Lee Roth/Sammy Hagar. Thats just the tip of the iceberg. Steven Tyler! The list could go on forever.

Bon Scott was the first AC/DC lead singer??No metal??AC/DC made metal what it is today! He is sadly missed, one of my favorites.

Rock n roll is what they play, they'll tell you that too.

Metal=anthrax, metallica, iron maiden, judas priest, suicidal tendencies[2nd album on...] ,testament , slayer, etc...

no biggy.

I do see the influence to more aggressive sounding.

to the guy who said paul stanley....he prances around on braodway, dresses up , make up, pretending , dancing around.....

more like 'front woman'. lol

rob halford is tougher than paul stanley and his gummby voice.

MICK JAGGER IMHO! Saw the stones a couple of years ago. Mick has the crowd in the palm of his hand, Ready to mold them in what ever fashion he chooses! Not a big Rolling Stones fan but they put on one hell of a show.

Not the greatest voice but we are not voting on vocal ability are we? It's frontman, entertainer, and Mick is both! Let's not forget anyone who has survived as long as he has knowing what he has done over the years gets my vote.

To pick "one" cant be done. It's impossible.
And because of that,we all win !

This guy wasnt to bad........Long live the "King" !

Gosh I think there is a lot of them but can't make up my mind. It seems that it's has a lot to do with the era you grew up and the type music that was listened to. But to pick one it would definitely be the "King".

I agree with all of the above except Jim Morrison..... I've heard that he was bad about getting naked on stage and I know he can't sing that's for sure. He sounds like he is talking when he is singing. :angry7:
