A little nervous!

Today's check of systems went well. Moderate speeds on rural roads. Up about 60 mph. Engine and suspension passed the test. Trans shifts at about 2500 1-2 and 2800 2-3 under mild accelration. It sounds like the kickdown rattles at times. Going to have to check if it is on acceleration, cruise or deceleration.

More checks tomorrow including freeway and harder acceleration.

Summary and to do list. Motor running well and staying cool, 188-193. Transmission seems to be acting well with upshifts. I don't even notice the downshifts, Is that good? or should I feel something?

The Bad, I was having some vibration in the driveline. I measured the rear pinion angle on the lift and it was down 7* and the rear of the transmission was also down 2*. Going to have to fix that before racing it. I will start a new thread about this issue.

2 minor exhaust leaks that need fixing, welding and the right exhaust hits the gas tank, easy fix.

Bonehead move of the day, I ran out of gas. Yep, I had put 5 gallons in at home and didn't even look at the gauge. All day the driving yesterday used it and what was in the tank. Lesson learned.

No racing this week

you shouldn't notice the down shifts unless you manual shifted it down.

You made a good choice to drive it a little before taking it to the track. A few minor glitches to work out. It's common.

That make is sound like the pinnion and drive shaft are at the same angle????

This is what they measure

If that's correct numbers you have a -9 pinion angle. Yeah it's gonna likely vibrate. Max down on the pinion should be in the down 3 which would give you a -5 overall.

Not paying attention to the rears suspension set up, you are going to have to roll the nose up a lot.

Can I use a 6 degree shim to get it correct? I really don't want to redo perches.

what is the rear suspension? stock spring, SS, cal track?

There are numbers you would like to baseline from for each set up.

I would look for a 4* shim and try it. It would put you at -5 which is a decent starting point. If it still vibrates roll it up with a 6* shim. See if the vibration is better with the 4* shim. If so, you are headed the right direction, BUT, rolling it up too far will inhibit the hook potential... It's a balancing act to some degree.

Ok ... too far away to drop by and pick up some shims then . LOL

Your local spring shop should have some .

That Tremec app works well .

Tomorrow is Race Day. I got the pinion shimmed. We have had it to over 100 on rural roads. Ready for the track. For the first time out, I will be towing it to the track. It is about 45 miles away and if something happens, I have a way to get it home. Thanks for all the help and advice.

Race prep question. I am running MT ET street s/s tires. What inflation do you recommend? The line lock is not installed yet and I probably will not launch at too high rpm. Any other suggestions? Equipment or tools to bring? Big rookie here, anything helps.
I will check all the safety stuff and fluids etc before leaving home.

Biggest thing with break in is camshaft and GET those rings seated!! Do not baby it or you may have to take it back out and rehone.

First day is over. I got 3 passes in during Test and Tune last night. Mission 1 accomplished, no crashes and no parts left at the track. I was underwhelmed by the performance of me and the car. Since I have not done this before, I expected a learning curve. First run 13.8 at 98 mph with .343 RT. My best was as below, car #634. I did not shift the 727, just let it do the shifting. I only revved a bit at the start and no burnouts to heat up the tires. I have never done that before and did not want to do that on my first try at drags. It hooked up well though and did not spin the tires at the start. I was satisfied with my RT for a rookie until pass 3, Red Light at -.088.
The motor was smooth it tracked well going down the track. I did not do a data log for the EFI, Wish I did. Today I will inspect everything and go from there. I have a dyno tune of the car coming up in August.

Interesting: I took mine out to the track 2 yrs ago, about the same new build , hughs engines 505 stroker kit. 727 , 3:73 dana 60/detroit locker , had 295 65 15 drag radials on it then.
Hadnt been on the track in over 10 yrs , it showed . First thing was getting used to the manual full discs, wouldnt hold like the old drum brakes on the hemi back in the day.
.136 reaction time . car had no front end lift at all, have changed front coil over springs twice since then. A little looser now, changed to 295 60 d15 treaded slicks , but haven`t run them yet .
A little more tuning on the fast 2.0 EFI , found something in the tune I left completly out.
Second run , .036 reaction time , still didnt have the stall down w/ the disc brakes , but better , dont think it hooked up till second gear (slipping, not up in smoke tho).
Both runs 11:90`s , highly disappointing !! . Should do way better , rings have seated since then too-----????????

Talking about learning curves, on 5th July me and my mate are going on the first T&T @SPR, first outing this year. Car is a '69RR, previously had a mild 440, auto shift 727, 4.10's DR's, SS/springs and ran from 12.5>12.8's@105.
Sunday he will pilot the new combo which is a mega block mild 589ci motor, roller cam, 724ftlbs@4400, max hp@6000, New race 727, 4400 stall, same 4.10's but with a Dana, caltrac/mono's, 9-ways, 10x29's, low first gear giving a high 11.4 SLR. Never driven anything like it, I told him he'll probably have to shift 2nd while its still up in the air, should be interesting, this is a street car and will be driven to the track, had 3 dyno pulls only, no street use since finished, should go mid>low10's, Have to ease him into it bit at a time, not sure how many runs we'll get in so play it by ear as its £150 entry for the day:(.....a little nervous?....
