2024 14th Annual FABO NHRA "Pick 'Em" Game - It's NITRO Burnin' Time Again!!!

I agree. What a **** show that whole race was. And then they kill the broadcast before final round of top fuel?

    factory magnum head replacement options

When the eq heads moved overseas to China (from Australia) the quality went away fast. I actually don’t even think they are even the same casting but I could be wrong on that. There are plenty of threads here showing how bad these are ootb, just do a search. That’s not to say they can’t be made...

Anyone try the Edelbrock VRS-4250 Carb yet?

The summit carb is a copy of a FoMoCo carburetor that Holley manufactured for ford. Edited to add; I may be wrong. It looks like the autolite 4 barrels were not manufactured by Holley. I’ll have to dig in to this a bit. I actually own one on a 64 galaxie I should know.

    98 obdII swap harness build

Start a new thread, and ask that question. You’ll get more help. First thing I’d do is monitor fuel pressure, making sure its consistent and ground the ecu.

    Spark plug reading

The ngk 4 is a hot plug. Looking at your pics it appears to be holding too much chamber temp. I like your previous plug choice better. The 6 or maybe even a 7 would be better. And you need a degree or two more total timing IMO for best power. If you’re confident in the tune up, go make a few...

    5.9L Magnum questions

I second this. And if you just pull a rod cap, the lower shell usually looks great. You have to look at the upper shell. And most of the ones I’ve done needed cam bearings.

I have no idea. I didn’t know speedmaster had a cast head.

    factory magnum head replacement options

I’m glad you are considering it. I don’t think I’ve seen a set of stock magnum cast heads ported someone with your background or experience. I’d like to.

A little cam tech for those interested

I watched Isky Straighten a cam years ago, and couldn’t believe how he did it. The cam was mountsed in V blocks similar to that, with a dial indicator, and he would roll it over, check the dial, then whack it with a BFH in specific places. It was great watching a master at work.

Why so much interest in magnum heads as of late?

    factory magnum head replacement options

A stock 5.9 magnum head from another junkyard engine sounds to me like your only option. There are Chinese (EQ) replacement magnum stock style heads but they are junk.

    Negative Height Valve Spring Retainers

Why can’t you use a thick spring locator? Howard’s had some 060 last time I looked. They may have thicker than that. For example COMP Cams 4713-16 COMP Cams Valve Spring Locators | Summit Racing That’s .100 thick. The spring diameters may not work for you but they might have something that does.

What should cold lash setting be?

Call Bullet. That’s the only right answer. He’ll give you the correct lash for your lobe. How much your lash changes during a heat cycle you’ll have to test for.

Cool find under my back seat

I was gonna say it looks like any old pencil from any old school. Then I noticed the “chrysler Corporation” script. That is way cool.

    (2)450 DP's vs (2)750 DP's

I wouldn’t worry too much about the tilt. While you’re driving the fuel in the bowls is far from static in level and always moving around. When you’re on the gas hard (when all of this tuning really matters) all of the fuel will be crammed one way in the primary and one way in the secondary...

    (2)450 DP's vs (2)750 DP's

I think his will be fine there also but if it were mine (and if what I’m thinking is correct) I’d try to kill two birds with one stone and lean out the bottom and richen the middle.

    (2)450 DP's vs (2)750 DP's

Yea. I’m spoiled by looking at lots of EFI data from my truck and watching a dead steady o2 on that. I strive to make my carbureted stuff run similar to that. Lean idle and cruise, slightly leaner light acceleration and fat wot.

    (2)450 DP's vs (2)750 DP's

That will tell you if the chamber is happy or not at your current timing. If you have ngk plugs in it, you can make 2 degree swings starting at like 28deg and watch the mark move around the bend of the ground strap.
  24. T

    (2)450 DP's vs (2)750 DP's

I aim for mid to high 14s for idle afr, if I saw his ~12.5 numbers I’d be leaning it out.
  25. T

    (2)450 DP's vs (2)750 DP's

Absolutely no idea. I have one and only one experience with stealth heads and it’s on @Turbo440Dart Chris’ car. I was there when it was tuned on the dyno but have no first hand knowledge of the timing curve it left with. My guess would be they are possibly a bit better than stock 915/906...

Bill, most importantly stay healthy and take care of yourself. Continue to do the things that make you happy and don’t be a stranger. I’m glad we met and got to spend a weekend at the track together. I still owe you a steak.
  27. T

    (2)450 DP's vs (2)750 DP's

Yes it will, but look how rich you are at low rpm, so lean out that range, and fatten up the range (1500-3000) above it. That’s the goal.
  28. T

    (2)450 DP's vs (2)750 DP's

The increase in the mains fuel does two things, it fattens up the cruise afr (youre fairly lean there and have lots of timing) and closes the gap between mains and transfer slot. The transfer fuel is tricky, if you can stand a lower idle, you can kill some transfer fuel by closing the throttle...

    The "El GTO"

He does nice work but the roofline is what throws me off. The hardtop gto has a beautiful roofline and the El Camino roof and windows kills it for me. But the work looks quality and not some hacked up junk like most cars like that are.
  30. T

    (2)450 DP's vs (2)750 DP's

Now you got me thinking about PV timing and narrowing the gap between coming on the booster, and adding PV fuel. Never thought about that aspect of PV tuning before.
