    Hypothetical 318 Builds

There's been a lot of 318 talk recently, so I thought what better way to have a little fun than have a hypothetical 318 built thread? Just a couple of rules. Must be stock 3.31" 318 stroke and "whatever" bore. Whatever heads, cam and pistons is fine, but no stroker. You start talkin stroker this...

    318 power!

You forgot the orange paint, even if it's a 70s blue paint motor, the orange paint always adds extra power.

Does this prove David Vizard's 128 lsa formula ?

I will say though.... i saw a documentary where one of the top DV proponents spent over a year building a $15k+ stroker ford with a dv cam.. and in the end it got smoked by a nearly stock 318 built by a caveman that uses cinderblocks to deck a block...... soo.... you may be right.. (it will...

    Popping thru carb when starting

Mild 318, 600 elec eddy, cam? only pops when starting and that's only once in awhile. Pretty sure it's not carb, last summer was carb playing and had 3 different carbs on there and it did it with all 3. Car runs great going down the road it's just that occasional pop when starting. I'm thinking...

    Stock exhaust manifolds vs headers

600cfm is kind of large. Whatever happened to the 390 Holley's? I used to run consistent 10.58's in the 1/8th with 3 on the tree, 198 open 3:23's, M-1 intake 318 BB or a Holley 2bbl off a slant. Stock valves and cam, Hooker headers with a H pipe crossover duals out the back, with Superior...

    318 cam

Do you mean a "stock" 318 ? Or a 318 that has been set up for a large cam?

    318 build suggestions?

Do not burden yourself with all those whose first response is to build a 360. Nothing wrong with 318 engines. Yes it is easier to get 400HP out of a 360, but sometimes you go with what you have or have available. What heads are you thinking about, and valve sizes? Aluminium are lighter and not...

    SB vs BB who wins?

The design is identical. The 318 was hobbled with low compression and a crappy emissions cam. A quick cure is to install a 360 or 340 cam. Fixing compression and bigger valves with minor porting wakes them up more at minimal cost, far a snappy street engine.

    Big horsepower 318 builds

Could do it with Bloomer heads. They make great power Not sure how much a 2.08 valve would be shrouded, but high lift 230@50 roller, 13 to 1 compression, good intake and carb, good ring pack, think it could be done pretty easily.

    318 cam

The biggest aftermarket cam I’d feel okay “recommending“ for a totally stock 318 is an Isky 256 Supercam. And even that might be more than the stock springs are capable of dealing with at higher rpm. The 2bbl 360 cam is fine, since they use the same springs as a 318.

    318 cam

In post #17, I posted where 4bbl and cam add about 100hp and 50tq, that seems to me a worthwhile upgrade, not saying to use that cam but does shows there is some potential in a stock low cr 318.

    318 cam

With NO modifications (assuming a 318 2bbl.)- not upgrading the springs, not eliminating the valve rotators (if present), or anything else, then just slap a stock 360 2bbl. cam in there: 278/278 .410/.410. It's not much, but the rest of the valvetrain isn't going to handle much more than the...

Steve Dulcich on building a budget 318

For the price of tearing into a 318, a low-ish mile (read 150,000) 5.x is, I maintain, a dollar for dollar, labor vs labor better deal for the hundred HP you gain while retaining good low end torque if using the magnum cam.

Steve Dulcich on building a budget 318

I'm gonna call a .480 lift cam pretty big for a "cheap" 318 build. I ran the Mopar 284/484 in my 9.5:1 383. and was told I should have used the next smaller by almost everyone. (which would have been the 280/480, IIRC)

    273/ 2 barrel camshaft options

You should not give advice for 273 engines. There is so much wrong information in your post. The 273 was the original LA engine. They were never a smog motor. The 2 barrel pistons were almost at zero deck and were almost 9:1 compression ratio. Closed chamber heads were used from 64 to 67...

    Cheap 318 performance mods.

I run early 318 heads with small valves 208/214 delta cam, and 9:1 in a w100 @ 4700 ft. 800 Rochester on a stock spread-bore. Save your money. Pulls from the bottom and hold 85on the freeway with ease 29” tire 3:55. 302 heads aren’t magic.

    318 low-rpm performance ........... for the NEWBE

...but there's still no answer on what "next step up" cam for my 4 barrel, dual exhaust running, driving, don't wanna put it i the corner 318 with 2.94 or 3.23 gears is like compared to some of the other , similar options.

Stop in for a cup of coffee

My car came with a Poly but it was too far gone to save... i ended up putting in a 318 with trickflows and a howards roller cam.. i'm bout 2 hours of work from starting it.. It was supposed to be a temp motor, the bottom end was $300 and no idea on if it's good or not... smelled ok though :)

What would it take to make 1.44 lbs-ft per cid ?

I do understand the context, you might if everything wasn't about your obsessions with the small. You mean cfm ? 2.23 hp per cfm. If everyone could easily get 450-500 hp out of 318 heads, you don't think people wouldn't be champion that. I imagine they could. No **** you act like this...

I tend to agree with 318willrun, weiand action plus or edelbrock performer manifold ( the weiand is probably the better intake but not much between them). Poll for Minimum Torque for a performance street Machine?

...in the day, the 340 was never known for being torquey, whereas the hi-compression 318 was always known to be particularly torquey for it's size. However; I once installed a complete 318 top end onto a 340 with the 318 cam, and had a real stump puller. Probably close to par with my 367 today.
