    Demand and Supply

My son has a Performance Engine Machine shop. He gets pistons for anything he is working on from his suppliers. No matter what engine you are working on you will need to have all the measurements to order the pistons. Not just send me 318 pistons. You will also need to have the block prepped...

Which head/combustion chamber is better for performance? Speed master aluminum LA or aftermarket magnum iron head?

My impression of an AJ response!: Not sure where you want to compromise regarding fuel efficiency, performance, and budget -the first two categories move in the opposite direction. Much of this is obvious but for review: More gears in your transmission, with a steep first gear so you can run...

    Cams for 318's

Thanks, That's a great article for any Teen owner that want's a little more. I bet just a little head work and 300 horse would be on the dyno screen. That would be fun in any A Body.

    Edelbrock 2.055 (30 degree back-cut) testing

Gonna give it a shot and see how wrong i am :) More overlap allows a better cyl fill which means more cyl pressure allowing more power, up to a point in which reversion would cause more issues and loss of power. Also depending on the combo/port design less overlap would make more power since...

You should still check fuel pressure.

    Slant 6 4bbl Carb Selection

I have been running a Performer 600 on my 289 and a Performer RPM Airgap manifold. Fuel economy was pretty good with 2.79 rear gears. I am rebuilding the engine and will install the annular boosters from the AVS2 650. The secondaries are where the extra CFM come from. I think it was The...

    Good Cam for 318

That’s a cam to increase mileage for sure! I think you are confusing two aspects of this and it starts with what YR is saying and how others are just simply wondering about a low dyno pull rpm test in addition to cam size, and I note see engine usage. YR is correct in his words but the...

    1972 Dart Swinger Header

You'll never notice the difference going to a shorty header. People spout off what they've read in magazines and forums for way too long. The simple fact is, you'll never spot the difference. Check out Hedman 78500.

Low speed torque and driveability ?

Now there was the qualifier, "among other mods". To properly compare and assert something you need as direct a comparison as possible. About 25 to 30 yarns ago, PHR magazine did a series of tests to compare 383 Chev builds. They rebuilt a 350 and dyno'd it. Then they put a stroker crank in with...

    LOOKIN FOR PISTONS (318)

seriously if going stroker buy the kit!! lot cheaper and easier than piecing it together your self and itll come already balanced!!! but if your going stroker youll need better heads than 318s, alot better!!! lotta folks hate on the big muther thumper cams cause a cam spect to yur build will run...

Engines with lack bottom end power?

Maybe so but, per the factory literature a 318 in 69 was rated 230hp@4400IIRC, (which is only 193 ftlbs torque) and 340 ftlbs at 2400 rpm : whereas the 340 didn't get to 340 ftlbs until 3200, and peak power of 275@5500 translates to 356 ftlbs. Engines do not make horsepower. Engines make torque...

    Howard's or Lunati

Id choose the 110 for a 318. 108 for a 360. Dan, can you post links to each of the cams your thinking of? Thanks.

    Header/manifold dyno test

True overlap likes long tube headers , but most wanting to run manifolds are probably not trying to push it over 350hp with fairly mild cams doubt even with something like an xe268h cam the difference between manifolds wouldn't grow much if at all, what I take away from it any 360 manifold is...

High torque 360 LA build camshaft recommendations

I've had some experience with a 360 industrial / truck engine once that had an oddball casting number of 857. They where like 234 industrial heads except they had exhaust instead of water going through the manifold crossover. They where small port like 234 industrial, so I imagine they had small...

    Evaluate Timing chain sets

Are you talking the regular red or the gold? The gold series have both sprockets nitrided. I've never had any issues with the Rollmaster sets and get pretty good mileage out of them. I pulled my 265 down last year for rings and bearings and decided to throw a new chain on while it was apart...

Making power out of the 318

30 or 40 months s not a kid. LMAO! Gas sucking by today’s standards! Fo-Sure! I did get 20 Hwy w/2.76 gears on 235/50/15’s in my ‘79 Magnum. No headers, just a decent tune and dual exhaust/a Carter 600, MP distributor and 2-1/4 dual exhaust with some turbo mufflers, as the non stick items...

Stock 318 2 Barrel Cam Choice

does that cam not fit a 318 LA? it says it does, 273-318-340-360.

    Stroker advice

The worst case of s you take the entire engine apart and clean it up, put it back together and install the new cam and go. That route sucks if you have a failure. “IF.” The other thing with the cam as 273 was pointing out is the duration (actually what is really important, the overlap) dictates...

who to trust for hydraulic flat lifters these days?

Title question pretty much spells it out. If I can't find any "made at least 25 years ago" and have to buy more current stock, who's good, or at least "less bad"? I have a set here that (I don't know why anyone would keep old used ones around) I bought from a swap meet, I know the guy who sold...

    318 power?

Get real. You want to compare, then compare apples with apples. The 302 Ford was their economy engine. So compare it with a Mopar 318 or GM 305. In emissions guise these all had crappy cams and lower compression. You want to compare your 340, do so with the competition performance engines. The...

Intakes? Boost? And bears oh my!

I ran the torker 340 on 2 nitrous motors 1 318 340 heads the 2nd a 340 318 had the hemi grind 340 had a g/k 243@50 108 both setups had 3.23s the 340 setup started as a 4sp put a 727 in it then back to the pistol grip 4spd dp on both setups the nitrous made up for the longer cams and not enough...

    Cams for 318's

If you want low end torque, then a 318 is probably not for you. Even if it's built to maximize the low end , it's not going to have much . It's simply too small. But then my daily drivers for most of my life have been big blocks. Anyways... I think we have gotten a little off course with this...

Converting from mechanical to hydraulic cam and lifters on 273 Dart

The rockers you have are superior to the hydraulic style. Stay with them and get push rods . You will be able to adjust your hydraulic lifter preload with the adjusters rather then using shims under the shafts. And most of these new lifters need adjustment and do not work with the stamped steel...

    Cams for 318's

I've mentioned several times that I'd love to see the same kind of analysis I've seen with big block cam selection or even stroker/340/360 cam selection applied to a reasonably mild build 318, with no other mods but, say a 4 barrel and dual exhaust, and maybe starting with one of the 9.2:1...

    Information on the 273

The reason I like 273's are they have small port, closed chamber heads, that will flow almost as much as 360 heads. From 64 to 67 they had solid lifter valve train and cams, forged steel cranks, and bushed forged steel rods. Pistons are almost to the deck and nut sunk like the larger motors...
