    Cheap 318 performance mods.

Personally and in my experience I cant see seeking out 318 parts (302 heads) the natural progression that I went through as a young man is play around with the 318, cam, headers carb exhaust, ran good but want better ... seek out and find a 340-360 ...that is the natural way of things not...

    Stock Cam Question

Hi everyone. So just got my 73 Dart Swingers 318 block back from the shop. Had it bored .30 over to match the new high performance KB Pistons I bought. Had the stocked heads worked on as well (valve job..resurfaced ect.) Using Stock crank.. Will be changing the 2brl to a 4brl edelbrock..Adding...

    Stroke a 318

honestly, if you're going to build a stroked 318, I'd start with an '85-91 block. they have factory roller cams, 302 heads. the roller cam is the biggie. you can get it reground, or get a roller cam and reuse the stock roller lifters at a much lower cost than the retrofit roller lifters...

    273 Commando Rebuild Or Not?

Not much different at .425 lift, but less false motion. I pretty much run them on everything. But I don't run anything but a 4 barrel carb and rev to 6,000 rpm. When you use good parts, longevity is a non issue in my experience. Most of my engines last forever with oil and filter changes at...

SBE 318 basic rebuild +CAM , INTAKE, HEADS, expectations?

The gain from using the 2.02s out weighs the comp loss i did it with a 68 318 street hemi cam 2.02 j heads torker 650 dp nitrous Had more torque then a 440 375 is cheap if t was rebuilt right speed master heads is the way to go

    Sixpack on a 318 engine ?

The 365/375 horse 327 had a cam in this range. Speed Pro still sells it. Put it in your 318 along with a nice intake and carb and some headers and see where you go. I bet that 327 had 10/1 compression at least which the 318 lacked. A 300° cam is pretty nasty especially in a small cube engine...

Aftermarket ignition ...do you really need one?

My setup is stock, 318/904/stock coil. modifications include Airgap, Holley 750 vacuum secondarys, Tti long tube headers, comp cam, Accel brass cap, Accel 8mil wires and Blue streak points. Going on 10 years without any issues.

    Better Torque From A 318

Nothing against research. See my 318 cam thread posts. I do agree there is certainly a wide variance in consistency with respect to seat of the pants power and torque from 318 engines.

    Magazine Builds

THere really isn't much difference between the LA and Magnum other than the Mag has a little better heads than a LA Teen and of course the roller cam. You can get the same benefit from a 85 or newer Roller cam Teen block. I have one in the garage and some Speedmaster heads in the basement. I...

    318 low-rpm performance ........... for the NEWBE

Well I got off track but I agree, the logic minded 318 guy will eventually realize that performance with a 318 isn't impossible its just more logical the the 360 . I agree that, a 318 will sound good with a cam but those down in the hole pistons and sub 4 inch bore leave much to be desired...

    5.2/5.9 H.P build guesstimate

I now own the magnum crate engine Holdener was using for testing. With the 212/218 cam and an rpm air gap it now makes 365.

SBE 318 basic rebuild +CAM , INTAKE, HEADS, expectations?

if you're going to delve into machine work, then you're into the 360 paradox. why spend that money on a 318 when you can make more power, easier and cheaper with a 360. and if you're gonna zero deck it, then why not get some decent pistons? something that can take spray or boost? as they say: in...

    920 heads - What Cam?

Keep in mind the factory 318 valve springs aren’t suitable for pretty much any aftermarket performance camshaft …….especially if they’re 50+ years old. Any cam swap should include a spring replacement.

1971 Swinger 318, conversion to a 6cyl/special motor mounts needed

OK, I just gotta know why? In 54 years of hotrodding, never once did I swap to a slanty, lol. Altho, I did rebuild a few. If it's for fuel economy, that's almost a myth. I'm pretty sure that I can get better fuel economy out of a hi-compression, modest cam, overdriven M/T 360, than any...

Does this prove David Vizard's 128 lsa formula ?

The above video is about him maximizing his 318 at a minimal cost, and utilizing his original valve train to work with the new cam grind numbers. Not "You Should Drop in a 360". 318 ^^^ ☆☆☆☆☆

    Horsepower Estimate?

If Jim's thread doesn't support this 340 making more than 300hp if everything was in decent shape, not sure what would convince folks. @PRH Had a 360 with a 214/224 cam. Car ran high 11's at 3000# Sounded like grandmas 318 Duster.
  23. toolmanmike

How much would you pay for this 340?

Get some numbers off the block and heads. Because it's blue, it could be a 72 or 3 with low compression, cast crank, small cam, and small valve heads. . Heck, it could be a 318 and without looking close, you wouldn't know. It's a core.

    318 LA Block Hydraulic Roller

Hello All, I am pretty sure you can do this but I wanted to ask to make sure. I have a 318 non magnum hydraulic roller block. Can I install a regular hydraulic cam and lifters? I have everything for the flat tappet. Cam, lifters, timing chain and pushrods to match. Using an electric fuel...

Feel like 360 should have more power

    At 6200ft I’d throw a stock 318 cam in that 360.
  26. D

What cam to use in a 318

Sir, I don't mean to sound disrespectful but read what I said and you'll see that I was asking if it's to much cam for the 318 that's being discussed that has a 9.2:1 CR. I didn't mean or say that it's too much cam.
  27. RustyRatRod

What do I need and what do I don’t!

So a stock 318 with bolt on parts. Yeah gotta have that MSD. They too have failure rates and some of them are quite frequent.
  28. 273

What cam to use in a 318

It's kind of considered middle ground for a street cam, above this level each step up you generally tend to start really trading bottom end power for top end power and gears stall starts to become more and more necessary. Obviously not set into stone.
  29. J

road car cam for my 318

that's a decent little cam for a run around. i've run that with a 1.6 rockers and it was a nice little mill with the added lift to that duration.
  30. mygasser

    Stroke a 318

there are several 318/390's on here that rev fine, as mentioned it's more to do with heads/cam/induction. at the end of the day the 392 will only be 0.050" under what's considered the 'majic' 4" bore of a 360 so not what you could really call a small bore anyway. neil.
