    1965 valiant 225 timing issues.

I hope not. I hate to have to pull the motor apart. I have been puttering around with it and I ran the valves. A lot of them were tight which I thought was weird. I also replaced the motor mounts. Did some fine tuning on the idle screw and it runs pretty good now. I got the pcv hooked up and...

Timing Chain Cover crankshaft opening is the wrong size

Thanks for the info as it's a 318 block and it's been running smoothly the timing chain cover is all I need to worry about along with a cast wasterpump. The timing gears and chain were replaced when it was rebuilt ( No plastic gears)

    Slant 6 timing chain lubrication?

...a file would even cut this material. My dremmel bits are very fine and can work down in grit to eventually polish. Is this acceptable? The bearings which were in the car where not champhered at all and had quite a few miles on them. I don't see how oil ever made it to the timing chain...

    360 Questions.. pardon my ignorance.

Good point, I may be too focused purely on the ignition side of things. I’ve worried about that, it’s just odd to me it was holding correctly for a period and the problem is intermittent. I’d like to think a mechanical problem like the chain would be more consistent.. or maybe that’s just what...

    New Timing Chain Set Loose?

...a LOT from you guys but at the moment I am stumped. We're rebuilding the slant out of my girlfriend's 69 dart and decided to replace the timing chain set since it was decently worn out. I've done a few motors before such as the ford 302 and an LA 318, and the new timing sets always going on...

SBE 318 basic rebuild +CAM , INTAKE, HEADS, expectations?

    That's under 8:1. Probably like 7.6:1.

Any Pontiac guys on here? Need insight.

Should see oil going up to rockers when running oil pump with drill. So definitely something to resolve. Does anyone really think a rebuilt engine actually has a plastic timing chain gear? Really? All this the timing chain gear is plastic on a rebuilt engine I doubt thats the case.

Possible Sources of Coolant in Oil?

If I recall, big blocks head bolts go into the coolant, so it might just be seeping up around the head bolts.

How to Rebuild a Small Block Part 10A (Optional): Timing Chain Options

...optional for building an engine, that's why it has the A suffix in the title... In this chapter I am going to explain the different timing chains available on the small block Mopar... In the last chapter I showed you how to install the camshaft and camshaft thrust plate... Here I'm going...

    Pulling from van tips ?

I had one but didn’t need to use it. Interesting thing is that this 1990 TBI has an electric fuel pump and no mechanical one but still uses a timing chain cover with a mechanical pump opening that has a block off plate. Im hoping it also has a cam with an eccentric snout .

Any Pontiac guys on here? Need insight.

I know this engine has been rebuilt and I would assume that he would of upgraded the timing chain. Uncle built the motor so, I will ask him if he knows what's in it, if he doesn't I will definitely check that out. Thanks

    Pinging on acceleration.

The factory specs are a bit too conservative. Even at 5 degrees before, you shouldn't ping. Carbon build up, leaking valves, and wrong plugs can cause ping. What do you mean by rolling? If you mean a varying timing mark, it sounds like you have a worn chain.

    Cam swap without pulling motor

timing chain or front cover in a van, yeah that sucks a big one. but doing heads? all day man! just yoink out the seats and you've got enough room to throw down a turkish rug and have a dang pick-a-nic up in there!

    1988 318 engine

...fuel pump (only if you have a carb) would be something i would carry on trips! The one thing that I would consider is to replace the timing chain and gears... If you get one for a 340 (double row timing gear) they will wear better.. A The factory usually used a plastic cam gear, or nylon...

    What causes "cam walk"?

Sounds like the button came apart & the rest was collateral damage. I use the stock timing chain cover. The space between the rear of the w/pump housing & the TC cover where the button is: I make a spacer that is a snug fit, push it into place & secure with silicon.

    oiling hack

I was watching a you tube video and if you drill a tine hole in the lifter bore galley plug (only one) and the same little hole in the cam plate will improve oiling the the timing chain. is this true or just a waste of time
  20. Inertia

    Disappointed,

I doooo remember in the sites early days, every engine issue, someone suggested "timing chain". lol
  21. toolmanmike

    Would you reuse it?

It looks pretty healthy, How loose is the chain in the middle of the gears? Nylon gear?

Timing Chain Cover crankshaft opening is the wrong size

This is the backside of the harmonic balancer, is the cap ring attached to it going to interfere with the crankshaft seal for the new timing chain cover, just trying to cover all the steps.

    360 Questions.. pardon my ignorance.

...you don't have to be super accurate, BUT you gotta be sure that the lifters are not bleeding down while yur doing it. And, if your timing chain is really stretched, you gotta do the test with the slack taken out from the "pulling" side. Ideally, the cam will be in a few degrees advanced. As...

    Dodge 318

If it has truly never been apart, depending on how old it is, it will have nylon teeth on the timing gears. You should at least replace the timing gears and chain Edit: yank the fuel pump and look inside, see what timing set it has, and finger the timing chain to see how much slop it has
  25. Ant

What's your opinion on the slack in this 318 timing chain?

Probably fine, but change it if you want.

    Fresh carnage!

I’ve seen gear drives get trashed from lack of oil. Timing chain wear is mostly from not getting enough oil on the timing set. And this is on not just Chrysler stuff. GM and Ford have the issue too. There is a big difference between a production car driven by the general public and a race...
