Smaller mains? The main bearings in a 360 are bigger in diameter than the 273,318 and the 340. Melted pistons sounds like a serious detonation problem.

I don't see cubic inch as an automatic gain in hp. That's the basic Magazine 400 hp 318 build recipe and most magazine 400 hp 340/360 seem to be similar too and even engines from other manufacturers, even seen similar spec NA 400 ish hp 4 cylinders.

I was being facetious about 318 comment. As seen in that video the 4 inch crank trick flow head 318 block engine made 530 hp which is pretty impressive and some thing anyone with funds could build.

...your build and if they require you to do mods to run them piston to valve and or retainer clearance etc.. Then you could decide different cam specs and or make the mods. But unless your building some crazy cammed 318 build with stock heads shouldn't need to do much for the average 318 type cam.

If you have the 318 build it Now if you stroke the 400 then you got something special at the same weight add spray you are over 600
