AJ's Opinions; for the Teener Street guys. You know; zero to 60 and a decent cruise rpm.

You guys just don't get it.
Not everybody wants what you know how to build.
True which is okay but the same could be said about your way. Problem is you use exaggerated numbers and situations to trying to convince people not to build what they want which is a 318.
Your solution for people that want to do a 318 is not to do a 318 lol.

AJ has convinced me, I'm gonna skip the 318, 340, 360, 383 and 400 and jump to a factory 440 and have drivability and power at every rpm range, even with 2.76 gear and a slushy convertor. lol
and still crush his 367.

how do you know what i know how to build?

conversely we all know what you know how to build...

there's an *** for every seat man, and some people don't want or need 97mph in the 1/8th smokin' the tires thru 2nd while splitting gears to stay in that perfect power band.

a lot of people just wanna drop it in drive and cruise. and lot of those same people either don't want or can't afford to splash the [insert dollar amount here] for a 360. especially when they could get most of the way there for about a smooth grand.

400 sporting 9:1 with dual quads and eddy heads cranking off 500/500 backed up by a 2200 stall 'verter and 2.91's

i think that might just be the ticket...

To me it seem a lot that want to add performance for a street only car just want a raunchy idle, full throttle blip, burnout machine and not much more as long it does those 3 things their happy.

To me that's one of the main reasons for running large displacement is to be able to run higher gears and for them to be or close to optimal for the combination.

I’ve put together a lot of stuff for people that have answered the questions, Do you want it to sound fast? Or do you want it to be fast? With an answer to only the first one. Sometimes their idea of the perfect hot rod engine is different from yours. And thats ok.

Most people aren't racing, they just want their car sound like a muscle car, be able to squeal out from a light and put you back in the seat with little full throttle blips, with the last one some are fine with 250 hp to put you back into the seat and others need multiples of that power

Agree. And that’s kinda my point. I would argue that most (70% maybe) people have no idea what 500hp feels like or what it takes to make 500 real hp on a dyno. But they don’t care as long as it sounds good at the drive in.

AJ, you are obviously a very smart and intelligent person that understands how to put together an efficient ride.
But your endless novels (posts) about the only way/your way, can be discouraging to young people or folks that don’t want to spend a lot of money.
You don’t have to have it perfect to have a fun ride…

I have seen a few "poser Cams" in action. They sound great idling and idling down the street but around 2000 or so they smooth out like Grandma's Poly in her 65 Plymouth. Here's a Teen with a Whiplash. Love the idle.

Same car, open headers and he rev's it a few times. Notice how quickly it smoothes out. Not much of a cam past the idle.

100%

And for a lot of these guy's asking how too do a mild hop up's to a 318 aren't probably overly experienced or otherwise they wouldn't be asking us. So their expectations probably not to come out with a super fine tuned crazy power house of an engine, as long there's decent overall gains over the stock 318 they probably will be satisfied with their accomplishments and give themselves a pat on the back in their first step or so in hot rodding.

Like you said it don't have to be perfect and probably won't no matter what, seems like it took 30 years for AJ to dial his in :)

The only 318 build i was involved in was 340 heads and intake with a crane fireball cam, sounded good but an old lady in a wheel chair could of beat it I a 1 block race. We were young kids and didn't have a clue, remember that like yesterday, ugg!

And those Fireball cams were $49.95. I sold a bunch of them.

Maybe 10 years ago a Elgin e935p (230-480) cam and lifter set from competion products was 89 or 99 bucks on sale.

See and I’m just the opposite, I can’t stand a cam that sounds like that, just for the sake of sounding like that. It had better run like a pro stocker if it’s gonna sound like one. And neither of us is wrong because it’s an opinion.

To my target audience;
Those of you with stock-powered 318 Darts and such, that drive your cars as DDs to work every day, and do not wish to be revving at 3200, nor getting single-digit mpgs, nor are interested in racing. But all you really want, is to get off the line a lil quicker.
Consider
that your 318 is making at most 140 psi, more likely it's closer to 130.
Let that sink in.
The factory 318 cam is about the smallest cam ever available to it.
Almost every bigger cam that you put into that thing is gonna drop the cylinder pressure.
Pressure is heat is torque is power. So
if you drop the pressure you automatically lose power in the range from idle to 3500rpm, the range that with your factory gears being from 2.73 to at most 3.23s, your engine is destined to be in, for 95% or more of it's life.
Let that sink in
Even if you had 3.23s, 3500rpm is ~32mph,
your bigger cam is gonna start adding power right about there, one hp atta time.
But, you gotta get to 32mph first, and your pressure is down, so it's gonna take looooooonger to get there!
IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT?
Furthermore,
with the reduced cylinder pressure, it takes more throttle-opening to find the power to cruise with, so there is a very good chance that your fuel economy will suffer.
Furthermore,
with less pressure, getting off the line is gonna be lazier than with the stock cam. I repeat
IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT?
Less pressure is the wrong way to go, and with a smog-era-teen, there is no easy/cheap way to get the pressure back.
My 318 friends;
listen to the Power junkie-clowns at your own peril.

Now then; Here's an example. Clowns take note, I said example.
Suppose your 2bbl-318 stalls at 2000rpm and at WOT makes 160 ftlbs there. Thru first gear, and the thru the 2.73 gears that most of your cars will have, this multiplies to 1070 ftlbs into the rear axles, irrespective of what's happening inside the convertor. Remember that number.
Now pretend you install a 4bbl and a 2800 stall, so now your torque is up to 200 ftlbs/WOT, an increase of 25%. Let that sink in.
Now think about it, what cam could you install to match that, at 2800?
Now lets install 3.23s which will multiply that increase another 18.3%, so now, into the rear axles are going 1583 ftlbs, a total increase of
47.8%
You are gonna need to install a mechanical supercharger on top of your stock-cammed 318 to match that.
But wait, at 2800, the 4bbl is barely being tickled, and those 3.23s are adding their 18.3%, all the way to shift rpm.
ISN'T THIS WHAT YOU WANT?

Who cares about 20/30 hp at 5000rpm which with 2.73gears doesn't come around until 60 mph in first/101 in Second? Hmmmmmmmmmm?

The truth is, that if you up-cam your 318, then you are gonna HAVE to do one of FOUR other things;
1) stall it up, or
2) gear it up, or
3) pressure it up, or
4) some combination of the above. just to get the low-rpm sub 3500rpm torque back.
So then, you might as well stall it up and gear it up, right from the start.

Over the last 55years, I've done it every one of those ways, and bar none, stall and gears is where to start, and if you can only afford one of those, let it be stall.
To the rest of you clowns that cannot read, you are not my target audience. Go start your own thread.
Big red X

But you only now how to build one engine!!!!!
And assume the rest about “US Other Guys.”

(Nevermind, you can’t.)

The most uneducated person (completely blind) following a modestly intelligent guy. (Light build on low)

Listening to this guy (273) will land you in trouble and un happy if not totally pissed off you wasted money listening to to him and wondering why you did with your build.

Same for AJ
