    Stroke a 318

honestly, if you're going to build a stroked 318, I'd start with an '85-91 block. they have factory roller cams, 302 heads. the roller cam is the biggie. you can get it reground, or get a roller cam and reuse the stock roller lifters at a much lower cost than the retrofit roller lifters...

Can anyone confirm my car's build date on the fender tag?

As near as I can tell (via Google searches) my car was built March 18 (code 318?) on the 2nd line from the bottom. Is this correct? Thanks for any guidance.

    318 low-rpm performance ........... for the NEWBE

Oh definitely following others successfully builds is a good thing, not knocking it. My point was you shouldn't need someone to build eg.. a 400 - 500 + hp 318 to know it's possible or it's gonna take some Nascar level of a build to do so. If your able to build a decent 340/360/408 etc...

    factory magnum head replacement options

I got mine assembled with everything $700 shipped years ago. Planned to go through them and then have a machine shop check them out as well. Just bought two 318’s A 1967 LA BLOCK with the forged crankshaft for $50 with some old/used/unused-by-me big block 346 heads and a...

    Electronic ignition upgrade.

Some people just won’t understand improving things. Saying what you have will be enough or better than I need. That’s just crazy to me, there is always something else out there that you can improve with. That’s like saying my 318 that has no issues and runs great with only 37k on it is good...

Making power out of the 318

Ode to the mighty 340. lol If you have a 318 build it. They can make decent power with the same mods as the 340. Now if I'm going out looking for a builder engine, it will at least have a 4.25" bore.:D

    318 build suggestions?

That's just it, Guys like us telling him not to invest a pile of $$$ into a teen DO CARE. We're trying to prevent an expensive mistake is all. Its just some friendly free advice that is exactly whatever its worth to the OP. I won't and don't harp on it. J.Rob

    318 build suggestions?

All that's true. What's also true is, not everyone wants a 360 in every application. THe 318 can get some really good mileage that's tough to get from a 360.

    Cheaper than dirt 318 build

So I have an 82 dodge d150 that is my daily driver, I don't like the slant in it and where most guys say the more they drive their slants the more they love em, I'm in the opposite boat. I don't like the slant (in this application). It has good power for an almost stock slant and pulls good...

...500 hp on a 3k budget now 400 hp on a 3k budget with 3.21 gears and a 318. He also asked what we would do to make 400 hp with 3k, I'm for 318 builds but sometimes people are asking the engine to be too many things. I've made suggestions on many different ways to try to accomplish his goals...

    360 vs 383

The 360 needs no defending these days (or past few decades). The street and strips are flooded with 360's performing at a very high level.

    1968 Barracuda fastback..formula S 383/4spd..Restore or not?

Of course it is his car, but why would you cut up probably a pretty valuable car, he probably could get a good dollar for it the way it is and buy probably better shape non muscle car (/6-318) to turn into a race car.

How About Building Me A 318

I will be picking up a complete 79 truck 318 motor likely needing a rebuild that got left at the machine shop. This motor will be going in my 47 Dodge sedan with a 42RH, 71 B body 8.75 and 3.55 gears. There will be NO racing just cruising, local shows and a couple of long distance shows. For...

What would it take to make 1.44 lbs-ft per cid ?

64/65 273 heads(yea those ones),360 crank,253 pistons 300ci,I’m the builder, and the guy who is advising me is the marvellous Bob Kotmel. I’ve got a W2 410 combo that makes an easy 600ish atm, this 273 will go in when I give the car to the missus, I’d like a Ve/f/g to put the 410 in

    Hypothetical 318 Builds

...is for naturally aspirated builds. No power adders like blowers, turbos and nitrous. Go start your own thread. This is to help guys with 318 builds get a good idea of what they are capable of. So with that in mind, here is my recipe for "around" 300-325HP 318 build. I would start with a 5.2...

    Back in the saddle again

Been here before, 2010. But, moved out of state, changed e mail address, and so on. Now back in Scottsdale. Still have the 65 cuda I bought as a body in 1978. Restored except for paint, 66 318 4bbl, 904 push button 355 posi. And of course, still messin with it. Been a Mopar Motörhead since 1975...

    Are 340’s rare

Fair enough, I have never priced 340 stuff. I would rather build a $2000 392, than a $1000 340 First choice? A 360 roller block stroked to 408, over ANY equivalent build 340. (That statement does NOT include a 416, that's not a 340 anymore)

Steve Dulcich on building a budget 318

Jim Laroy proved you could build a low compression engine that makes power on here more than once. As long as the flow's there, you'll make power. Evidently, Chrysler knew it, too.

Steve Dulcich on building a budget 318

I'm gonna call a .480 lift cam pretty big for a "cheap" 318 build. I ran the Mopar 284/484 in my 9.5:1 383. and was told I should have used the next smaller by almost everyone. (which would have been the 280/480, IIRC)

    318 value

Your comparing a mild 318 to a built big block, I'm talking very mild under 400 hp. I'm just saying a lot of people would like to get away with highway gears, stock stall, daily driver idle, good throttle response and great power from idle to 4000 rpm that's a big block. No reason a mild big...

    318 low-rpm performance ........... for the NEWBE

I could not get through the 1st post by the OP, I'm a bad reader. Sorry AJ. Just build a 318 like Ford guys treat 302's, and you'll be in the 11's in the 1/4 mile in no time

David Vizard - Which to prioritize - PORT FLOW or PORT VELOCITY?

In 2011 for EMC I built a 371 (.060" 360) that made 513 ft/lbs 1.38 tq/ci 532hp on pump gas with teeny tiny EQ iron Magnums that at the time only flowed 267-272 cfm . IMO I made them a bit too big in the bowls. Weiand X-celerator manifold/750 XP. That engine was surprising for what it was. When...

    318 low-rpm performance ........... for the NEWBE

If the only way for you to know if an engine can be built to perform is cause someone else did it first and you need a recipe to follow maybe you don't know much as you think you do. A good builder should be able to build anything especially if it has a ton of aftermarket support like a 318.
