Nothing to do with higher lift cams. My Custom Royals had the same system, low compression export 361 engine. 1958-59 Plymouths sold here also used that system, 318 Poly engine with a 2 bbl carb.

Those Whiplash cams can run strong. The key would be to use the ONE small one for the 318 and not the one for the 340/360. But you need to keep in mind, they still have the same requirements regarding converter and rear gears as any other camshaft in their duration range.

Sebambam, I have used both the Summit K6900 and K50052 in 273 and 318's Great cams for budget builds. With your choice of heads you may consider the K50052. I agree with Icetech and the small chamber heads to boost compression.
