road car cam for my 318

-
Funny. A 112 and 115 LSA both kicked his *** on HP and TQ.
Yeah …. Interesting. That little cam in my Barracuda has a boatload of low rpm torque ! Way more than I expected from a 222/229 on a 112 .
Which is why I think STRs current cam may be fine but in need of an engine tune .

That AVS carb despite what everyone says is a ***** to get spot on . IMO…. I still have some work to do on my 800.
Running way rich at cruise.

What did Eric's testing prove? The only thing that I can see is this: if you have all these variables such as pick any LSA you like, pick any duration you like, pick any valve lift you like, pick any lobe series you like........surprise, surprise......someone will be the winner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is what this test proved, nothing else. It was a joke & if the believers think this test proved something, I am waiting to here what it is.......
It is like testing two cyl heads, one with higher CR & better flowing ports....& being surprised that the high CR head won....
One thing it show even supposedly upper builders will vary wildly in their cam selection and results and seemly similar cams can have a decent difference at that level and there's seems to be not one right answer look at the top 5-10 they very quite a bit even though there is some similar traits.

LOL

I'd take the cam with 12 degrees of overlap.........

It proved that Vizard’s tit ain’t the only one to be suckling on.

Since I don't know/understand much about picking a camshaft, my engine rebuilder suggested this Melling:

He said it would be a good choice for my ice cream parlor cruiser (.030 over original 318, LD4B intake, 1406 carb, MP electronic ignition, factory exhaust manifolds, FlowMaster 40s, 2 1/4" pipes, A904, 3.55:1 sure-grip 741 case 8 3/4" rear end with P245/60R15 tires (15" X 7" WheelVintiques Rallye wheels).

I've never checked the gas mileage, so I can't share any information on that point.
That looks like a DEAD stock 2 barrel cam. Is that what you want?

These 318 cam threads are getting to be comedy. Either the guys want a huge cam in a stock engine and it's a pooch until you wing it up to about 5 grand where the rest of the combo is pooping out or we talk for pages about a stock cam. :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead:

There is no right cam that will suit everyone, question is what's the right cam for the OP and unfortunately only he can answer/find out that.

I have a 318 in one of my Darts that is mated with a 42RH 4 speed OD automatic, and has 2.94 gears. 8.5:1 compression, Edelbrock Performer intake and a 650 AVSII. It is a long distance road trip car. I believe that the current cam is not serving me well - 17mpg on the road, lack of vacuum for power brakes at low RPMs, rough idle especially when in gear. When in overdrive with the lock-up converter engaged:
45 mph - 1550 RPM
55 mph - 1700 RPM
65 mph - 1850 RPM
75 mph - 2000 RPM
(all numbers approximate with relatively small tach and my 54 year old speedo (augmented with a GPS))

I'm looking for suggestions for a different cam. There used to be a ton of "mileage cams" out there in the late 70s/and 80s but I don't see them advertised these days. The one in there now is advertised for 1800 to 5000 rpms, so a lot of my driving between 45 and 65 mph barely gets into the range when I'm out on the road doing miles. I would like to boost the gas mileage if I can, and provide more vacuum to the booster for stop and go in town driving.
Call Delta cams in Washington. He ground me a 208/214 .425 lift on 112 Lsa for my 318 and I love it. Excellent torque and power with 318 heads and a quadrajet 4bbl.

Is that basically a 360-4bbl cam?

I have a new Lunati voodoo in that grind but its .455 lift. Was going to use it in a 318 in a power wagon but will probably rebuild a 360 i have so might go a step larger on the cam.

Good question. I do not know. The comp 260h works well to 212/212 .440 on 110, but I wouldn’t run it with 8:1

stock 360 2bbl is .410/.410 and 252/252 (or there abouts, 71~74 was slightly mas)
stock 360 4bbl is .430/.444 and 268/276

ETA: 360 2bbl cams work great in 318's and that 425 grind from delta is very similar to an old MP purple shaft grind.
My Son has a purple shaft 211/218 .410/425 on 110 in his 9:1 360. Blazes the hides well…
