Poll for Minimum Torque for a performance street Machine?

right now it's a 318 with trick flows, roller cam and rpm intake (was worried bout hood clearance).. i think a lot of guys needing 700+ tq/hp haven't had that on the street or are doing mostly strip where it makes more sense. but that's just an opinion.

Someone needs to start re-casting 340 blocks

Why? 4.04 vs 3.91 ID. That is .13 of an inch. Not worth the expense. 340 power was in the combination of heads, cam, compression, ignition curve, exhaust, and induction. It really is that simple. 340 blocks are a little stronger, but they are both made of good material. No one wants a...

    My 1972 F7 Dart Swinger

My repaired covers from legendary showed up this morning. I'm hoping to get the seats finished up this week! I spent the weekend pulling my engine out of the car. I wasn't happy with the power level. Now I'm looking into options to get my CR up. I measured each piston to see how far in the...

How would you rebuild this 318?

You have a good collection of parts already for a healthy 318. If it turns out to be a bad rod I would just eagle sir or summit rod it along with some kb167 and a. 028 head gasket to get the compression up a bit for the healthier cam you are running. If it needs to be bored, and the crankshaft...

    PTC converters switches hands

    Wow Boosted !! thats a nice improvement !! reminds me of a similar situation for me years ago : my 340 was broken and I threw a 318 in just to keep racing it ran 13.20s ( 318, 360 heads and a 340 cam , 904 , 3.91 gears ) I had a 10 converter .. I put in a Turbo- Action 8 inch ( still have it...

Factory hydraulic roller set up on an older block?

...this very thing for my 67 318. The oem roller lifters are too tall and the oil band cleared the top of the lifter bore with just the stock 318 cam. If you wanted to bush the lifter bores, i’m sure that would correct that problem. But after all that hassle, it would probably be cheaper to...

    86 Black Roller 318, swap/interchange into 72 318

340 Forged cranks are balanced for heavy forged pistons. If you use one with 318 pistons especially hypers, it's gonna cost heavy dollars to balance that up. IIRC those 340 pistons were around 719grams versus like 550 on the stock 318s. Hypers would likely be less. Save some cash, use the 318...

273 swap to 318/ build, cost, potential, daily driver

Sounds like you first need to decide what you want. What do you need to get your 273 done? The cam I offered to sell you is as close as we could get to a stock Commando 4 barrel cam. It would work for a 2 barrel or 4 barrel carb. A used 273 or 318 crank should not cost much. Done, nothing...

318 head porting for the average joe

I agree, But A so called 318 port was basically designed for a 273 an engine that's 45 cubes smaller and that head is not really designed to make any real amount of hp with any displacement. Saying that a 273/318 heads aren't too bad if looking to make under 300 hp with moderate cam sizes. The...

    Fuel pump eccentric problem

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I am putting together my 318, and when I try to tighten down the cam bolt it starts to flatten out the bowl shaped washer before it reaches proper torque. I saw torque specs from two sources, 40-45ftlbs and 50ftlbs. Are the specs too high? It's my torque...

What cam to use in a 318

Depends on the person. IMHO that is getting a bit more duration than I would want for a street 318. To me 220° @ 0.050" is about the max for a street 318. As you are aware a larger displacement tollerates or likes more duration and lift. Personal preference and expectations vary widely.

Making power out of the 318

I think that much cam with those gears would lack bottom end torque. ....but then he won't compromise on "I gotta have lope".

How much would you pay for this 340?

Yes, the 340s began life painted red. They began switching over to blue late 1970. My April 1971 340 came blue.

    74 Duster (318 CI) to 440

I was looking at the speedmaster sb heads. Can they be used with stock rockers?. Those a cam intake , carb could squeeze a bit out of the 318 I assume? ... Then drive it have fun and Gen3 HEMI it in the future. ( I have done a bunch of LS swaps , so I am familiar with the EFI world too). Or...

    920 heads - What Cam?

Replacing a stock cam is almost always worth the effort. But you have to define your goals. If you’re just after a little lope and don’t want to do a converter or gear swap, I’d stick a comp xe268 in it. I have one in a 70, (9.2:1 advertised) 318 and it runs good, sounds good and doesn’t feel...

    318 .40 Over..?

Have a few 318's that are .060 and one with a purple cam will not run under 200 degrees and heaven forbid you hit traffic or a stop light. The others run 170s and haven't had an issue and I do tend to beat the tar out of everything I drive because my kids love burnouts... So do I. .040 aint nothin

    273/ 2 barrel camshaft options

The Isky cam above is not over "over cam" for your engine with a 216 @ 0.050" duration. The definition of "over cammed" that I use is when someone put in a cam without thinking about the rest of the engine. The cam is the first thing you pick and that choice defines the personality and usage...

How far in the hole 318 pistons

Wait; 30>50hp from nothing but a cam-change of ; 10* extra intake duration, and 19* additional overlap, that is only meaningful with headers and a free-flowing dual exhaust? I'm just not seeing it unless the rate of lift goes off the chart, or unless you are including the 4bbl, the headers...
