How reliable are snout extensions for the fuel pump?

So I pulled the engine and the 46rh today . I haven’t pulled the timing chain cover off yet but I do see that it has a cover with provisions for a mechanical fuel pump and a block off plate . Which leads me to hope that it might have a snouted cam .

    Would you reuse it?

It looks like a factory style with nylon teeth. Personally I don't run any that have the nylon teeth. Not sure what is available for Slants, but I would try not to. The nylon is junk

    2 barrel to 4 barrel

i would swap the camshaft, the intake, carb and a new double roller timing chain set at the same time. Your adding more fuel and air but your camshaft can’t benefit from the upgrades truly with that stock camshaft. Trust me you’ll want more............

Any Pontiac guys on here? Need insight.

Once I get it oiling the top end I will worry about taking off the timing cover.

    Pinging on acceleration.

...what that means. The metering rods are tiny diameter. I am not sure if they are adjustable. There is ways to check the slack in your timing chain. One would involve pulling the valve cover. The other is popping off the distributor cap. Putting a breaker bar on the crank bolt. Checking for...

...so I should probably just get the Edelbrock chain. Thanks for the tip for the Enginetech hardware kit. Obviously it's not great that the timing chain is bad, but it sounds like it might have been the culprit for the engine idling kinda rough and pinging etc, so I'm glad I checked. After...

    Pushrod Problems

You need to have a look at your timing chain before going too much further. Before you know how to adjust them, or what the correct length pushrod is, you need to know what type of cam is in it, hydraulic or solid. Then you measure for pushrod length with an adjustable pushrod and adjust the...

Over the weekend I drained and removed the radiator and hoses, removed the fan, water pump, fuel pump, pulleys, harmonic balancer, timing cover and the chain itself. The old chain had not as much play as I thought or as the distributor rotor indicated. I wanted to make sure those plugs...

    Trick flow harmonic balancer

That was my thought as I was tightening the balancer up as it got closer, but I think it should be good as is. I have rotated it and the balancer is pretty true and does not get any closer

Came to post about the valve to piston concerns. Drilling a hole? Brilliant. Done. Thank you!

What's your opinion on the slack in this 318 timing chain?

Well, you made a decision at least. In my mind how long will it be before that 5/16 is 1/2 or more? Probably not long. Good luck!

Timing sprocket gear loose against cam key.

Yeah I 100% agree with you unfortunately this timing chain set came with an engine rebuild kit off of eBay the Pistons and bearings and everything already installed so I'm not going to take all that apart to send everything back so I'm kind of screwed that way.

What's your opinion on the slack in this 318 timing chain?

I measured it (not by degrees). With a straight-edge against the sprockets I can push the middle of the chain 0.318 inches (yes - it was 318 I swear!). That's 5/16 inch (5.1 / 16 to be exact). So it's not the 1/2 inch that's supposed to be the rule of thumb for replacement. There's a lot of...

440 power gains/ aluminum head advantages?

You got that right, not to mention the sprockets being machined poorly with the keyways in the wrong places. Add that to the cheap chain stretching and you can really stack the lack of tolerances up! I've seen a timing set come up almost 12 degrees retarded on a big block Chevy and that was with...

...cover with a nylon mallet while looking for a pressure drop and saw nothing. Wondering if it's leaking out of timing cover into the timing chain area, leaking under the intake, or a head gasket. I'm going to try pressurizing and hand rolling the engine over to see if I get anything out of...

    Timing Chain

Cloyes may have had one of the original "true roller" timing chains in part # 9-3103 for Mopar small blocks. I've used them almost exclusively for decades & I believe they were sold under the Direct Connection/Mopar Performance label as well. I believe they have discontinued the old number and...

    New Build Startup Issue

Your Disturber housing seems to be correct, so I would say the drive gear is set in wrong. Move your cap wires two notches CW and that should give you your #1 firing position. if everything else is correct. Timing gear and chain is in the right position?

    Internally balanced 340 questions

While the water pump and timing chain cover have nothing to do with the engine balance they have everything to do with the year of the car and which side of the harmonic balancer the timing mark is on and for the side that the bottom radiator hose hooks up. As I said earlier I'd check the...

What's your opinion on the slack in this 318 timing chain?

...moog, BF Goodrich, timkin, etc etc that were once associated with quality are now compromised and produced off shore in the name of profit. If your timing chain had 100,000 miles on it ok yeah change it out but not with minimal slack and 10,000 miles. Again just my thoughts, others may...

    3.9 L Cam/Timing chain noise @42K mi. Normal?

There's nothing "normal" about a noisy timing chain, so lets just bust that myth right now. Normal? No. Common? Very possibly. 142K maybe?

    Ignition problem

...the timing gear. Either the teeth had worn down or the chain had stretched over time. I don’t know which was the case. Either way, the timing chain had developed enough slack that when the starter was engaged the slack was pulled out of one side and added entirely to the other. This caused a...
