you have it all apart! why not verify the grind and confirm the install *before* you order a key or timing set you may or may not need? rule number one: never trust a blone with hoop earrings rule number two: trust but verify it's not like it's any more work! or hard work! and it's right...

rocker shafts installed backwards... long read. but pics!

...wear also. I had some misfire at idle develop and that lead to this teardown. I've had the push rods out and check the lifters also. The timing chain slack seems to be the issue. I could rotate it 10 degrees before the rotor began moving. rotating slowly to measure the play in the chain. Ill...

    273 or 225?

First rodeo, long drawn-out can of worm's V/8 swap. I can see the case for a 225 refresh. Why the lock up? Maybe it's just a crank job? Timing chain wrapped? Cam seized? Was it burning oil past the rings? Ever overheated? How many miles on the 225?

440 power gains/ aluminum head advantages?

at one point i did take off the timing cover and rechecked dot to dot and it was on. seemed like it was a little off though because i could not get it to line up perfectly 12 and 6 o clock it was slightly to the right. but moving it a tooth either way was way off. the more i think about it the...

Whistling sound coming from the carb, right at tip-in ('71 318, Holley 2 Bbl).

Throttle shaft bushings aren't to difficult to do if that's your problem. Only front end rattle I've had before ended up to be the oil slinger. Rattled for some reason after I had just replaced my old timing chain.

    No oil to top end

No oil to the heads and a timing chain was changed ? I have seen new timing chains mistakenly installed off by a tooth. It may not cause total oil pressure failure but enough effect what reaches the top. Also the gauge you are using ?. Is it no longer the one from the truck .Are you using a...

    Slant six dies in gear

Timing chain is just a couple weeks old, seems to be doing fine. Only thing I could think of myself is a my distributor. When I ordered it in and installed it it didn’t work so I rebuilt it at home and it’s seemed to do okay. Wondering if something went wrong when I rebuilt it

A QUICK QUESTION ABOUT MANIFOLD VACUUM

...If they're dancing to the same drummer, put an independent vacuum source on the VA and repeat. If the dancing continues, check for timing chain stretch. But if the dancing stops, blame it on the VA. To prove it, disconnect the VA, then run it back up to 1700 and simultaneously advance the...

Advancing stock cam in a 360?

Be careful using words like “any”, “every”, “always”, etc. The results with things like cam timing are rarely definitive. For example, if the cam has 4 degrees ground in already, and you move it forward 4 more degrees, do you think what you said would still hold true?

Stop in for a cup of coffee

So here’s a question for you. Assembled engine minus cam shaft and timing chain. Currently oiled up and wrapped in plastic trash bags, is there a better way to try to keep it safe from moisture over the winter?

Part hunting for timing chain job

So I'm trying to get a good recommendation on a stock timing gear replacement and what other things i'd need to do the job. Far as I know this is a 120k mile stock slant 6 car. Based on the sludge in the valvetrain I figure not really well maintained? could be wrong. But anyway. What sort of...

Timing chain cover and head bolt questions

The longer headbolts are self evident if You look, but they go between the intake ports with the oil feed passages. The timing covers were changed on LA's so the seal could be popped out the front in later years, the older ones have to be pried out from the backside, this was discussed recently...

[WANTED] Small Block Timing Cover Hardware

Just as a supplement to this diagram....the stock bolts that went into the water jackets had built-in seals for the threads. When reusing them, yes, add some sealant. Also, those two lower 1" bolts should have sealer added too. they go into the timing chain area and can leak oil.
