318 runs real load and shakes like crazy

It sound to me like either: You have bad plug wires/cap and rotor. Firing order is off, its easy to switch 5 & 7. Timing is way off. Timing chain itself has jumped.

Hi Folks Can anyone advise if a timing chain cover will stand up in a glass bead cabinet? Thanks

Seriously? I've drilled so many I've lost count.

"It ran when I pulled it"

I've seen them never used one. It depends on how much slop the new chain has I would imagine. However I really can't comment as I never used a tensioner on these LA engines.

    360 Questions.. pardon my ignorance.

...with the engine completely warmed up? If not, this can affect how the timing is read from a light. There are other variables such as timing chain wear, slop between the distributor and camshaft gears. You also need to know that "some" bounce is normal. In an engine with a lumpy camshaft...

    Fresh carnage!

...Lack of oil usually results in heat, as in blue rockers or rocker balls/shafts. Never seen blue, wear, stretch, - no heat on the timing chain, or gear. As to the hole in the thrust plate, that I broke several drill bits trying, never made a hole. Look at the broken thrust plate in the pix. It...

    3.9 L Cam/Timing chain noise @42K mi. Normal?

I think I have replaced every 3.9 timing chain in north east Ohio in my 36 plus year at a Chrysler dealership. If it's a 3.9 with even 12 thousand miles it will be noisy. Those thing are like a paint shaker.

    My 1972 F7 Dart Swinger

I was not able to get the timing and idle set correctly. I had an issue with the carb and with the added issue with timing, I took the car over woodruff carb. Dave graciously agreed to take a look. He fixed the issue with my carb and installed a lockout plate in my distributor. Then he set...

Building a new 505 With Callies / Mopar Performance Block

I don't sell shims, we usually adjust end play buy using different timing chain cover gaskets. Superformance used to sell a bunch of different gaskets so that was the easy way. I've never run into one that needed that thick of a shim but if that is what you need then take a look at McMaster...

    Timing Chain Drip Tab PN?

Hey guys I'm trying to find a replacement drip tab for the timing chain drip oiling. I can't seem to find this anywhere. I did post in the wanted section but not having any real luck there. If this doesn't exist I'll probably just have some laser cut. Could someone here drop a couple pics up...

What's your opinion on the slack in this 318 timing chain?

I'm not "worrying" about it. The timing cover has been cleaned up, the pitted backside surface around the coolant passages have been filled with JB weld and sanded smooth, paper felpro gaskets have been dressed with Permatex aviation goo (I would have used high tack but the store didn't have...

    Timing Chain

...are completely dependent on the design of the engine and the tensioner. Lots of newer engines have multicam systems too, and longer timing chains/belts, which makes a tensioner(s) much more necessary. Just because your Kawi has a tensioner and it revs to 17k doesn’t mean you need a...

...and belts. Next the fuel system as stated above. Same with transmission fluid, filter service. Unless I am mistaken a 88 may even have a timing chain tensioner. They greatly improved the gears and may not have a factor at 160K. Unless the van didn't see good maintenance over the years...

...side, the later bodies (70 and later) had the lower radiator outlet on the passenger side... You will want to use the period correct timing chain and water pump set-up to match the vintage radiator that you plan to use... They moved the timing marks 90° when they moved the lower radiator...

    Timing Chain

here's the key: those engines were designed with the tensioner incorporated into them. the components are specifically built and spec'd out to work together. the part that gets glossed over in the whole argle-bargle of tensioners is that people were installing them with chains that were not...

Do you have the factory spacer between the pump and pulley? Both my polys with iron pumps had a 1/4 inch spacer between the pulley and the flange of the water pump

    318 Oil Pan Gasket/Sealing techniques?

I thought the same thing about pulling it out for an overhaul but it runs so well as is, so I really hate to do it. It will get a new timing set for sure while I have the front cover off. I’ve got a lift so it takes a lot of the frustration out of doing something like this.
