    1988 318 engine

If you have access to an oscilloscope you can check for excess slack in the timing chain with that. That won’t tell you if you have gear about to fail, however.

    What causes "dieseling"

Is the vacuum advance working? Not that it would cause your issue. Remember this though. As the timing chain stretches over time, the camshaft timing becomes more retarded. So more ignition timing may be needed to compensate for that.

    Varying spark, out of ideas

What about wear in the distributor shaft bushings. With the cap and rotor off try wiggling the shaft to the front and rear and left and right. It should only have .002" clearance. Hardly enough to feel. If the bushings are worn, the shaft can flop around causing timing to jump around.

Question: What is the Best timing chain setup LA or Magnum

Chain guide? No such thing or reason to have a “Chain guide.” I like the double roller with the Magnum timing chain tensioner.

    Adding timing chain tensioner

I put the tensioner on my 340. I had to replace the timing cover. At 21K miles I checked the pads on the tensioner. No wear at all. This was with a Cloyes True Roller chain. That surprised me. I thought there would be some wear with the double roller chain.

[WANTED] 318/360 Cam trust plate bolt with holes

I’m looking for the bolt with a hole that holds on the cam thrust plate and also the piece of metal that drips oil on the timing chain. Thanks jesse

[WANTED] Small parts needed for a 318.

You don't need both. One or the other, bolt or oiling tab. Or you can just drill a .040 hole in the thrust plate.

What's your opinion on the slack in this 318 timing chain?

Maybe from the retarded cam timing?
  9. Iron Oxide

    Timing Chain Tolerance

I bought a 225 not long ago with a hole in the timing chain cover because the sloppy chain wore through it.

    VVT cam timing

So I have had my Duster running for about a year now and it seems to run fine. It idles smoothly and I can drive it anywhere. I is a 2012. 5.7 hemi truck engine that is mostly stock except for a 392 cam and Mopar springs and a mega squirt gold box. But it doesn't seem to have the power it should...

In Garys motor? you can see the whole damn chain in the first few seconds.... and most of it in the thumbnail... wtf

    Slant 6 timing chain lubrication?

I can't think of a single Chrysler engine that has pressurized oil to the timing chain. IMO, that's why the chains stretch really quickly. They don't get the amount of oil they need to keep them cool and lubed. I said lubed.

    Varying spark, out of ideas

Timing chain. I had the same issue after about 25-30 hours on my motor. Changed out the Cloyes true roller to a Pro Gear from Hughes. The issue went away.

    Bent Push Rob Saga

yeah, if it wasn't rebuilt only 1000 miles ago i would have said timing chain stretched and jumped teeth. easiest check for stretch is to turn the crank back and forth at the pulley bolt while watching how far it moves each way before then rotor arm moves. it shouldn't move very far at all. neil.
  18. Dana67Dart

What could cause this bent push rod (not a Mopar, but still…)

...for the heck of it. It was placed in-between a rock and a had place Like the valve was open at the wrong time and the piston hit it. (Timing chain, stuck lifter in the up position, valve stuck closed and the cam and lifter tried to open it) I guess a lifter could have pumped up But most...

    Advancing Cam Question

Why would the damper move at all? You’re moving the camshaft in relation to the crank. Edit- Got it. It appears you’ve figured out that your test proved you installed the cam retarded.

    Varying spark, out of ideas

...rotor included, and just checked point gap again, setting it to .018. I put on a new coil and new wires. I thought I had diagnosed a timing chain with weak stretch, as it had all around low compression (106-122 psi) and varying spark timing. I read of a way to test chain stretch without...

    Would you reuse it?

I picked up the sweetest old lady owned, garage kept 5th ave once for $200. She parked it in her garage and would not start, so she bought a new car. Yup timing chain went out, it had about 85K miles on it. We used it for a family car for years, kids called it "the old comphy couch"

    crank no start

...cap off to see that the rotor is turning when cranking it over. Start with the basics. Rock the crank back and forth and watch the rotor to see how loose your timing chain is. Possibly the chain jumped a few teeth if it is loose enough, throwing the mechanical timing out of whack. ☆☆☆☆☆

    Non A-body mopar question

BTW.. '67 coronet was my very first car... slant 6.. got it for free and put in a $11 timing chain and drove the piss outa it :)

rocker shafts installed backwards... long read. but pics!

before installing timing chain, soak it in a can of engine oil, for half a day, then install, it. chain will last longer. old motorcycle trick. just food for thought.
