    Correct initial position for distributor

That position of the rotor can all also be changed by moving the position of the drive gear. [Lift it up, turn it and drop into different position] Factory has the slot pointed towards #1 cylinder. Obviously, that is where the rotor should point when that cylinder is at TDC. Attachment of the...

Which head/combustion chamber is better for performance? Speed master aluminum LA or aftermarket magnum iron head?

Mentioned were Edelbroor Performer, TrickFlow, Speedmaster and ProMax heads. What about the 1970 and 71 stock 340 heads with the large 2.02 valves? Are any of those aftermarket heads better/worse? The literatures says "increased performance". Performance doesn't necessarily effect gas mileage...

Life after Holley Sniper - back to Carb

34 degrees total timing [VA disconnected] is very close to the "magic number". My 340 initial timing is set at 10 degrees, which gets there. I guess every distributor mechanical advance must be somewhat different, so you might want to play with initial a bit.

    Correct Engine Color

I looked at all the charts for the 340 engine colors. However, I am the original owner of a 1971 340 Duster. Built April 1971. Engine came BLUE.

Elec woes, crank, no start after running then parked.

I had a similar situation last year. Driving and car started bucking. I pulled over and the engine died. It turned over but wouldn't start. Fortunately, I carry all the necessary spare parts and basic tool kit. Checked; gas getting to carb . . . yes. Spark . . . no. BTW> if car starts but...

    NGK spark plugs breaking.

Why are you removing the sealing washer? I'm thinking that is bringing your plugs a bit closer to the piston, causing the breakage.

Tips n tricks for exhaust install

You'll most likely also need to install a mini-starter. Install the TTI headers 1st. I think TTI instructs to work from back to front. p.s. The stock Mopar chrome tail pipes won't work. You have to use the TTI versions. You'll also have to cut to X-pipe [or H-pipe] a little to fit to the header.

Good Initial Timing and Too much Total Timing Problem. Seeking guidance to minimize total timing. 1969 Swinger 340 4 Gear

Vacuum Canister Basic: CCW turns = higher vacuum needed to begin adding advance [later advance] CW turns = lower vacuum needed to begin adding advance [sooner advance] *Neither effects rate of advance

Good Initial Timing and Too much Total Timing Problem. Seeking guidance to minimize total timing. 1969 Swinger 340 4 Gear

You might try [using an allen wrench placed into the hose port] adjusting the vac canister spring. The spring will adjust 8 full turns, stop to stop. Tightening the spring [clockwise?] will slow the VA if advance coming on too quick. I would check the initial setting before I make any...

Good Initial Timing and Too much Total Timing Problem. Seeking guidance to minimize total timing. 1969 Swinger 340 4 Gear

Since there are no marks on the distributor weight settings, I wonder if adjusting the total timing weights can be done with the distributor in place, so that one can more easily start the engine and check the results?

57 is too much. That's why it's pinging. Set 35 with vac hose disconnected at 2600. Should make 50 when hose is hooked up

2600rpm 50 total with everything hooked up. You're getting vac + mechanical advance

How much would you pay for this 340?

Yes, the 340s began life painted red. They began switching over to blue late 1970. My April 1971 340 came blue.

If it starts, but stops when you release the key, it's the ballast resistor. Usually on the driver's side firewall. It's white, about 3/4 x 3/4 x 4"
