Backspacing and Offset - the never ending headache of wheel shopping

Oem GM SS wheel? Like a camaro/chevelle wheel or what? Why not any old steel, and moon discs all around? I found out that wheelsmith is still in business, and will make what you want, probably. I have no idea of the cost. I've been shopping for a set of 15x5 or 15x6 steelies for my car...

    Floor Shifter Options

I would have recommended a Winters sidewinder shifter (bulletproof, rear entry cable, Mopar specific) but when I looked at summit they only show 727 versions. I don't know if they would work with a 904. Very similar to a turbo action cheetah..... only they come with a cover, and about $150...

    Engine?

Exactly. Lots of dual four barrel GM apps in the late fifties.

    Engine?

The lady across the street, many many years ago had a 56 Buick. Same deal. Turn the key, floor the gas pedal to get it to crank.

    Engine?

....."only company.....?" Well, I was wrong. Buick had a 4bbl straight eight..... but only in 1952, and only in a roadmaster. (wcfb, white cast four barrel) But it wasn't a flathead.

    Engine?

Already solved by the time I saw this thread, but I was gonna say Packard. The only company that I know of that used a four barrel carb on a straight eight. Saw this Packard eight in an Intenational pickup at a local show Homemade manifold and drive for the 4-71, headers look like two right...

    Wheel advice

Cragar ss are a chrome plated steel barrel, with a chrome plated aluminum hub. Since a steel hoop doesn't need as thick a bead as an aluminum wheel an 8.6 guess for overall width is a good one. So yep, I think a 15x8 steel wheel with a 4.3 backspace is probably zero offset.

    Wheel advice

Pretty easy, really. (At least backspace) Rear space and backspace is the same thing. It's the measurement from the inside edge of the wheel to the mounting face. Almost always in inches. (Center bore is the size of the center hole for axle flange or disc hub size). Offset is how much the...

    Wheel advice

Most of the extra width of the 15x7 in the front is to the inside. It should fit with a moderate sized tire. A 14x6 should fit easier, but I would avoid 14"tires if possible. I seriously doubt a 15x10 will fit with that backspace. It would need more like 5.5 " bs. The 15x8 will fit much better...

    Mopar Ring gear i.d

741 pinion shaft is straight, same size as the threads for the pinion yoke 742 has a shoulder at the pinion yoke threads, and has a larger shaft. 489 has a funnel-shaped tapered shaft.

    Fuel pump question

Agree. That 4-bolt plate looks like a smallblock chevy fp mounting plate (not a blockoff). No idea why it was used as a spacer, unless the pump being used was wrong too.

Sure-grip & spare tire size questions

I'd carry a spare as close to the rear tire height as I could. If it's a little off, I'd still use it on the rear if I had to, and get the tire repaired or replaced as soon as possible, with as little driving on the miss-match as I could. BUT..... (Axle speed differences occur CONSTANTLY when...

    Testing the HiRev 7500

NT, I've still got a very low-use gold box sitting on my shelf. Still willing to give it a look? And the timing light example is a good one. Basically, ignore the numbers, and set the timing in YOUR car, with YOUR light, where it runs best. (At least that's the way i read it).

Ideas on running slower E.T without throttle stop

Imo...... All the tuning suggestions will slow the car a bit, here and there. But the o.p. wants to slow the car from low 10s (10.20 or so?) to 10.90. I would figure out how to make the stop the o.p. has, in post#9, work. Most consistent, easiest way to kill a substantial amount of time...

Hooker headers with Milodon 8ct pan

Might have to "adjust" the headers a bit.... or modify the pan sump. (I'm assuming the triangular sump pan. You can use a hammer and drift on the headers, if you need to spread the headers you could use a ratchet strap or come-along tied to a tree. I had to modify the front corner of a milodon...

Ideas on running slower E.T without throttle stop

Do everything in your 1st post.... and disconnect the secondaries. OR.... I used a bolt throttle stop that I made, but the stops in #9 and #10 will definitely work. (When I disconnected my secondary on a 800dp, I only lost about two tenths, but that was enough. Got me out of the nines so I...

    Guns, Dogs and Blades QnA

Well, they did it again. On the way in from morning play session, collecting the balls to put em away, the ball I get from cudabug (Cuda) is completely destroyed, 1/3 to 1/2 of it missing. Pour out the peroxide, AGAIN! Poor Cudabug, takes his dose, pukes a couple times..... nothing. He was...

    Need help identifying moter

Looks like a Dodge red ram to me too. Could measure from one plug to another to get an idea of bore centers, rough idea of displacement. Meaning: small, heavy, weak. Fun motor for a t-bucket, or no-hood 32Ford, but that's all I'd use it for.

    318 build with dyno session

I have respect for 318s, basically a 327 equivalent that never got any factory hiperf parts. Hence, no reputation. Since I personally wouldn't "build" a 318, I'd be more interested in the 390 build. But since stock stroke seems to be winning, I will certainly tune in to see the results. (To...

    15 inch tires?

I'd bet walmart has the cheapest tires around. Their house brand version of Goodyear (can't remember the name, I'll find it) Edit: Douglas. Got a pair on the front of my 62. (Only skinnies I could find on short notice, when I needed a pair for a race) No complaints.
