need help with leaky trans pan

This one's been idle for awhile but I'm bringing it back up. I'm having the same problem. However, I have yet to get a chance to check all of the afore mentioned common leak areas. I'll get to that soon but wanted to bring up another possibility... a buddy of mine told me he's seen the same...

    74 Scamp BB swap questions?

What's your goals for the car? And keep in mind that they might change a couple years down the road. Maybe consider a platform that you can easily modify in the future if you're looking for more power. How are your mechanic/fabrication skills? You might need to make a few custom brackets and...

Thanks for the pics and good info. I currently have the 440source adjustable rockers and figured I'll be able to retain them (MP heads use stock rockers). Is there any reason these rockers w/ be subpar for the mods I'm making? What lifters would you recommend (that fit the stock lifter...

    Roller cam thrust

Thanks for the reply 68. I ordered the Cloyes hex-a-just before reading your reply. I also got their cam button. I'll see how it fits and dimple the cover if I have to. That's a sweet ride you have there.

I'm not sure how far in the hole the pistons are. That's the 1st thing I'll check when I pull the heads. You're right about the 311 heads. I'm going to go w/ the 524 now. I'll send them to Modern. I've already purchased a Cloyes hex-adjust double roller timing set w/ a thrust bearing...

    Roller cam thrust

Can someone educate me on what I need to do for cam thrust when switching from a flat tappet to a hyd roller cam? My understanding is that the lobes on the flat cam are tapered to make the lifters rotate. This forces the cam to the rear of the motor against the plate. However, a roller cam...

Gear is a 4.10 w/ 27" tires. I have a 3.55 I can swap in for street driving if the 4.10 gets annoying (and it does above 55 mph). Car weighs 3400. I'd like to get into the mid to high 11's. 550hp would be awesome but I'd be happy w/ anything over 500. I can spin the tires at 20 mph or so...

You guys make some good points about keeping the iron heads and possibly adding nitrous. I agree that I can reach the same goals and save money going that route. I've made up my mind on going w/ AL heads though... I like the increased flow, lighter weight, hopefully better sealing valve...

Alright, here's what I'm going w/: MP 5153524 heads CNC ported Edelbrock Performer RPM intake (they don't make an air gap for a big block do they?) 750 cfm carb (I'll take any advice here) Hyd roller cam (probably XR274HR... 224/230 duration at .050", .574/.570 lift w/ 1.6 rockers)...

Thanks for the #'s womanator. That's the kind of gain I'd like to make. I'm not familiar w/ the specs on stage IV heads. How do they compare to the "452" and "906" MP heads?

    milling 440source heads

I'm not an engine guy so correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding of quench distance is the distance from the piston to the head. In other words, and amount that the piston is in the hole plus the thickness of the gasket. In your case that would be .120" for a shim gasket or .140" for a...

Now I'm not so sure... I'm finding a lot of posts like this: http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=52902.0 I know that's just a few folks opinions but the exposed gasket and dropping valve issues seem to be repeated on several forums. So, back to the MP heads. Everyone...

Good point. The #'s and price of the ported Steaths are hard to pass up. And after all, I'm not building an all out race motor... just a strong street motor. How bout the induction? Am I giving up more then 10 HP there?

    aluminium head questions

If I can find a CNC ported version of the MP heads I'll probably go for them. The off-brand, China made stigma of the Steath heads has me a little worried. However, I haven't found a ported version of the Mopar head yet. Does anyone know where I can find one? Also, what intake/carb combo...

    aluminium head questions

Lets forget cost for the time being. I'd really like a set of Indy heads but as far as I know, they don't make a set w/ straight plugs. Is there a closed chamber set of heads w/ straight plugs? Going from my 452's to the MP's would only bump up my CR to 9.8 or so. I'd like to get to 10.5...

Ok, lets assume for now that the angled plugs wont work on my car. What's the best straight plug head? The only ones that I know of are the 440Source and Mopar Performance heads. I've heard mixed reviews on the Steath heads. My understanding about the Mopar heads is that they're copies of...

I've searched and read as much as I can about the topic but I have some specific questions about my build that I couldn't find answers for. My car: '74 Scamp 3400 lbs 4.10 gear 727 w/ 3000 converter 7.67 sec 1/8th mile (haven't run 1/4 but expect low 12's) 440 .030 over, 3.75 stroke 452 heads...

    Disappointing #'s?

Initial timing is 16 or 17 (been awhile since I set it). All in timing w/o vac is 35 to 36. I'll have to check the all in rpm. It's been awhile since I ran the car and will probably be another couple of months before I run it again.

    Disappointing #'s?

Yeah, the 395 HP was throwing me off. But now that I realize it's at the wheel that's not bad. I think 475 @ the crank is a bit high though. I was hoping for around 450. Maybe that's about what it is. I haven't had a chance to run the 1/4 yet to see if it can actually run a 12.0...

    Disappointing #'s?

On second thought, is that HP at the wheels? This one says that a 3580 lb car would take 405 HP at the wheels to run 12.04 in the 1/4: http://robrobinette.com/et.htm However, using the 17% driveline loss, it says that would equate to 475 HP at the crank. There's no way I've got that much...

    Disappointing #'s?

Do these #'s seem a little disappointing? I know folks will argue that the six pack setup isn't ideal but I would've hoped for more. I'm sure there's a little left in timing and carbs. Speaking of carbs, would it do me any good to invest in the promax metering plates for the outboard carbs?

    Disappointing #'s?

Ran my car for the 1st time on the 1/8th this weekend. It ran a best of 7.68 sec at 88.6 mph w/ a 60' of 1.67. Using this converter: http://www.hotrodpitstop.com/tools.html#3 a 7.68 1/8th would be a 12.06 1/4. Using that and the fact that my car weighs 3580 lbs (w/ me) it would take 395 HP...

    adjusting oil pressure

Well, I believe I found the cause of the high oil pressure. Apparently when you buy a high pressure pump you will have high pressure. Imagine that. I'll replace the spring w/ one from a stock pump and see what that does for it.

I do have cork gaskets. I silconed the gasket to the cover as well as around the bottom 1/2 of the head (just 1/2 of the head so I can get the cover back off). I'm also using hold down bars that spread the bolt load out. I have the factory stamped covers. I would like to use more rigid AL...

    adjusting oil pressure

I think my oil pressure is a little on the high side. My gauge is pegged. The gauge doesn't have #'s so I hooked a mechanical gauge to it. If I remember correctly (been several months), it was 70-75 at idle. The car smokes a little from time to time. I think I traced it down to oil entering...
