That looks like an old Ford carb like I had on my 69 302 van. But I could be mistaken.

While the engine is out upgrade your brake system. Whether you go to disc or just changing over to dual reservoir Master Cylinder, you've got plenty of room to work.

Or swap your wires 180 if they are long enough.

If it's backfiring thru the carb I would say the distributor is 180 degrees off, turn the rotor button 180.

Manifold Mounting If your manifold is leaking you should hear it. Follow the sound for the leak.

The pictures are dark so I'll try to get newer ones. I only used the front manifold and cut the original for the rear so I could keep the choke assembly since I live in a colder climate.

A radiator flow test would really answer some questions.

I'd go with flushing the radiator. Good Radiator shop could have it done in a day.

If the torque converter is not seated all the way in, it will bind causing the engine not to spin.
