Overdrive or don't worry about it? !

How about buying a second pig with a 2.73 or so in it. Then switch them out for your long drive, and switch again when you get home. Hi RPM drone will bother you on a long trip. @MrJLR Looks like @273 and I came up with this at the same time - and he’s a faster typer!

What shop is doing it for you Jim?

I just did about the biggest bone head thing in my life!

Just tap it and screw in a plug. No problemo!

    Vibration.....Driveshaft?

Me too, though my buddy with the Archer has spooked my wife into thinking I'll get killed on the first flight:-(. Then after he spooked my wife he asked me when he could fly it!???

    Vibration.....Driveshaft?

No, I wasn't a pilot in the USAF - just a civil engineer. I did get my multi-engine instrument rating though. I bought a gyrocopter years ago (just like the one in the original Mad Max) and it's on my To Do list to get it flying in the future. Till then I just fly my buddy's Archer. I'll bet...

    Vibration.....Driveshaft?

I edited my post with the link in it. Here it is again. I chased down a bad speed related vibration by myself and it turned out to be a pinion angle that was too nose high.

    Vibration.....Driveshaft?

He absolutely was not correct. Maybe he was talking about something other than driveline angles? Here is a nice short YouTube video that explains the angles and how they relate to vibrations, etc. Check this out:

Here it is: Watching online... This is the article on the free driveline angle finder app.

    Vibration.....Driveshaft?

I would check the pinion/driveshaft/trans angles! Check for another post on this here as there is a free smart phone app to use on this.

mixed info on setting pinion angle?

If the noise is only present in reverse, I would drop the chunk and look for a broken tooth on the gears.

I agree, very nice engineering on that Del! Merry Christmas!

    Leaking trans line on Jeep

Thanks Rustedwrench. I priced out the hose and for $8 and a couple of clamps, I'll do it. But with the engine off and on a warmer day. Next week the weather is expected to hit 70 on Thursday. It's 38 and very windy today. I got this Jeep from my father in law, after my sister in law...

    Leaking trans line on Jeep

Now it is my turn to ask a dumb question. I have an old Jeep Cherokee 1989 that I use only to plow the snow on my driveway. It is no longer registered and inspected, so I don't plan on ever driving it on the road again. I started it for the first time this year (yes, it started right away -...

    stupid question.... answer needed

Yeah, that's the place to check and fill. If the hole in the plug is stripped, heat it with a torch and use a chisel and ha,met to tap it open counterclockwise. If it is not stripped, then a square drive extension should fit it.

please help : car vibrates heavily

I would strongly recommend not driving this car! The problem could be almost anything and it could cost you your life if you keep on driving it this way. If you can't diagnose difficult mechanical problems, then you should not trust your life to fixing it yourself. Please take it to a...

    speedo question?

It's the speedo. The internal workings are magnetically driven and it seems that instead, the magnet is touching the spinning drum causing it to be directly driven.

Another question about 8 3/4 rear ends

It is my understanding that all 8.75" housings will take any center chunk made.

    Cracked 904 Transmission Bellhousing

Also, be sure to check the angles of the trans, drive shaft and rear diff. They should be set right or you will get similar vibrations as to those you described.

Any suggestions for fixing this speedo pinion?

I believe that gear is made out of nylon. As such, glues will not work.

Pinion angle - have a vibration

It is so easy to add wedge shims under the spring perches to test an angle adjustment. Just buy a few shims of different angles (Jegs or Summit has them) and pop them in from smallest to next one larger. Take a test ride after each and see if the problem is better or worse. BTW, the angles...

    Diff Oil Change

Suction gun the old oil out. Fill to overflowing at the fill hole. Use synthetic gear oil (90 weight) and check to see if it needs the friction modifier for the Sure Grip (a quick call the tech support number of the oil manufacturer should take care of this part). I like Royal Purple, but...

    Differential Plug

Torx was invented in 1967 and it took a while for them to be adopted into Detroit's products. The plug on a 7-1/4" diff is 3/8" square drive and it may be stripped or rounded out to make it look like a Torx drive plug. If so, you won't be able to get it out with any normal drives. In that...

    Poor Little Cone Style

Thank you Mr. Treblig. Tell your son that an old ME recommends that he look to those who can jury-rig a setup if he wants to see a simple way to solve a problem. Most times when I look at a problem, I try to figure out the easiest and cheapest way to solve it. Then when I get the good fortune...

    Poor Little Cone Style

RRR, please keep posting. Whether you correctly explain how something works or not, the resulting discussions are very informative. I am a mechanical engineer, but I've learned years ago that I know almost nothing of how many things actually work - but I don't care! I think a line in Joe Dirt...

    Rear end and Transmission rust

Use POR 15's Metal Ready after it is completely degreased. It will eat all the rust and leave a zinc phosphate coating on the clean steel until you paint it shortly afterward. Prime it,sand it to remove pitting and then paint it.

    Yoke phasing

Why not grind the welds down on the yokes, realign them and reweld them? You only need to do this to one end. Remember that the shaft is hollow and the yoke is just welded around the tube's circumference. Then you can have a driveshaft shop rebalance it if it shimmies. This would be the...
