    Pro and Cons of E85

Thabks for the good info. Guess I'll continue to offer up my pound of flesh for the un-leaded hi-octane $10.--/gal. stuff for the foreseeable future... :banghead:

    Pro and Cons of E85

No doubt about it; an A/F ratio meter is NOT CHEAP, but I can't imagine trying to tune any forced-induction engine without one. It could probably be done, but, not by me.... :banghead:

    Pro and Cons of E85

If you have a good-quality, working, A/F meter, is there any reason why you should need (or, want) to "read" spark plugs? I'd think the mixture information you could get from a wideband, data-logging, oxygen sensor would be better than anything a spark plug could show you, but I am asking...

    Pro and Cons of E85

Thanks for the good information. I appreciate it! I think the stoichiometric ratio for gasoline is 14.7:1, but they recommend a ratio of 11.5:1 for boosted engines, so, I wonder what that E-85-R number changes to, under 20 pounds of boost. Probably, a lot richer.....

    Pro and Cons of E85

Number one; I have never heard of F-85 R and am ignorant of how it differs from regular E-85. Fill me in, please. Number two, I don't race that much, so, I never buy 55 gallons of anything at a time. Because I am still in a "tuning" mode and still learning (watching my A/F ratios, closely,)...

    Pro and Cons of E85

You say, "The pro's outway the cons by far with using it in a race car. I wouldn't go back to race gas, if someone was going to buy it for me." Is your car turbocharged or supercharged? I am thinking, probably not, because the consistency problem that forced-induction cars have, keep them from...

    Pro and Cons of E85

I don't know much about E-85, but I have learned that the people who make it are very lax about quality control when it comes to actually seeing to it that is is, in fact, 85% methanol. Pump E-85 is all over the place regarding actual percentage of alcohol, and, therefore octane. I wanted to...

I retired from the San Francisco Chronicle in 2004 and moved back to Little Rock, Arkansas where I went to high school and had grown up. I miss the great Bay Area weather and the world-class drag strip at Sonoma, but not the traffic and smog checks every two years.... Nice to hear from you...

I used to watch that car at Fremont Dragway (California) back in the eighties. It had a 273 in it, I have a picture of it around here, somewhere when it was a Super Stocker.... Maybe I can find it...

    10.70 66 valiant 4 door

My partner and I searched high and low for a commercially-avilable slant six turbo header and couldn't find one for sale anywhere in 2010. As far as I know, that hasn't changed. So, we did what we had to do: We built our own. I should say, my partner, Freddie, built our own because all I...

Here's another '66 Valiant that goes 10.70s: Turbo Slant Six 10.74 @ 127 mph 7-19-10 - YouTube Too bad you guys live so far apart... (he's in South Dakota.) or you could have an interesting match race!!! Or, you could build a turbo motor for your other (slant six) car and have a PAIR of...

Maybe a rear-mount turbo (back by the rear bumper) with a stock, low-rise intake manifold with a bonnet like SixPakAttack has might be low enough??? It's worth looking into; the performance gan would be outta site... You could modify that carb hat, which is already low, by using just one end...

Don't know if he has room for a turbo and all that exhaust plumbing, but there's more ways than one to skin a cat. Here's my 360 Magnum/'72 Valiant with a Vortech V-1, S-trim centrifugal blower with a home-made mount I fashioned out of a piece of 1/2" aluminum plate. With minimal other...

    Help me settle an argument

NHRA uses horsepower factoring to adjust the classes for their idea of "parity" in Stock and Super Stock ratings. Eons ago, cars were classified by their shipping weight divided by their advertised horsepower but that was so long ago I can't even remember when they changed to the "factored"...

Have you got any kind of a carb spacer under that 650? By increasing the plenum volume, a 1"-tall spacer will trick the engine into thinking you've got a bigger carb than you have... and, they're cheap. Good luck!

    Glenwood Iowa Track

LOL! I lived in Des Moines in the '60s and '70s. I used to race at Blair and spectate at Cornhusker. There were bumper stickers on some of the cars I saw in Omaha that said: "DODGE STREET RACING ASSOCIATION." Not living there, at the time, I didn't know there was a "Dodge Street."...

Ian, I don't know what you mean when you say, "we run low 8 the 1/24..." I'd like to hear a lot more about that engine, if you don't mind. Maybe you could post some pictures or a video??? Is the car that pale blue on in the video at the bottom of your sig line?
