Planning a set of used 2.71 gears for my Duster. Can't get them installed until spring. So...how to best store them? Thin oil coating? Grease? Sealed museum vault with zero moisture and 100% nitrogen atmosphere? :poke:

If you're worried (I wouldn't be), I would just go with a pair of Moser axles.

If there is no pilot bushing in the crank (there might be), you need PN 53009180: it's a needle pilot bearing that fits into the pilot hole for the torque converter. If that isn't available, 4338876 is the adaptor sleeve that presses into the pilot hole, allowing the use of the PN 4338859 bushing.

What axle? I think you can still get actual Chrysler gears for the 8.25".

When you want aftermarket wheels, wheels larger than 15", or easy-to-service disc brakes.

Actually, it has several other advantages: mostly, an abundant supply of late-model axles and parts in almost any salvage yard! When was the last time you saw an 8.75" axle with a 3.55 Sure Grip in a junkyard? I could probably find an 8.25" with a 3.55 SG in a day!

OK...first, caveat: I am not a metallurgist, a welder, or an axle expert. However, I am trying to help, so please do not throw old axle parts at me. First: can you pack it with rags/newspaper/whatever, get in there with a grinder, and simply remove the welding "edge"? Second: honestly...

Some are (avoid the weak Dana 35)...AFAIK, aside from welding on spring perches, it is a direct swap.

Check your car: you may HAVE an 8.25" axle already! If not...that would be my choice, probably from a 1996-2001 Cherokee.

The 7.25 is a boat anchor...don't romp on it until you have upgraded! Anyone running a welded differential on the street should be arrested.

Before going any further...what rear axle do you have and what is the ratio? Not a Feather Duster, is it?

If it's behind a diesel, it should handle a 360...but no idea on the ratios.

Dana 35 is weaker, the welds holding the tubes to the centersection can fail, axles snap easily. Most Cherokee sites should have a spotters' guide. One big help: if a Cherokee has ABS, then it does NOT have the 8.25" axle. (All ABS Cherokees got the Dana.)

Width should be the same (+/- 1") as a Ranger 8.8--but I do not know exactly what that would be.

Probably cheaper to just get a B-motor 727.
