In the late 70's early 80's I build a 1973 318 with 360 J heads, steel 340 crank, 471 lift purple shaft cam and 430 rear gears. This engine make killer horse-power and was one of the fast cars in the York, Pa area!

Autolite Is The Only Spark-Plug To Use!

I would do a leak down test both cold then warmed up. Then pull the heads and look at the pistons. My the way, what do the spark-pluds look like? KP

The cam that I have always used in 318's that works great is the purple shift 471 lift and 289 duration.

What heads are you planning to use?

I Like Option 4 Better - I buy it for $500

You may want to looking at it from this point. If you pay the $175 for the parts to be balanced and are like most people, you are going to question if the balancing was done correctly. Then you end up paying your local machine to re-check the balancing that will cost more and if they find it...

You can put a 340 crank in a 318.

Can anyone tell me where I can get the tool I was told is available that allows you to remove the Roller Followers and then take out the Hydraulic Lash Adjusters to inspect them with out having the remove the cam and cam cage? This sure would be a big help!
