    Help with block ID

for all we know someone took a stamp and marked the block for their own personal reference. The stamping isn't square either. Machine shops stamp info on blocks all the time. Customer information etc.. There are just to many variables but none seem consistent to what Chrysler, Direct Connection...

    Cam Identification

you probably will need to mic the camshaft. I would anyway to check for wear. Then compare to known DC/MP purpleshaft camshafts http://www.lunatipower.com/Tech/Cams/CamSpecTerms.aspx

    Help with block ID

are there any number on the left side under the head mounting surface? these would be stamped not cast. So far nothing seems odd other than it being maybe a warranty block. If it is a 68 cast engine the vin stamp sometimes will be on the lip where the trans bolts to the block and not the pad...

it would have been a forged crank from the factory. Also I missed -The P on the assembly info stands for premium fuel.

    Engine identification

E = 1969 model year built at the W = Windsor plant, "s o" is actually "340" and 2889 is the assembly date - June 25, 1969, 0133 is number of engine assembled that day up to yours. vin 9 = 1969, B Hamtramck car plant 424241 is last 6 of vin.

    Engine identification

The partial vin is, stamped not cast, on the right oil pan rail about midway on a machined pad about 2-3" by 1/2". The engine assembly info is, stamped not cast, on the left, front of the block just under the head mounting on a machined pad 5-29-69 it appears which seems likely used in an...

    #- 3462848 manifold

I can not speak to the 714 head directly. You'll need to use small port 273-318 intake or you'll have a intake/head (wrong direction) port mismatch and turbulence that the 340 intake will give you (again I do not know if 714 uses large intake runners). What year 273 4-bbl intake are you planning...

    #2658920 cylinder head, chamber shape?

same head used in the 66-67 273. I do believe they consider it a closed chamber head. There are a few cc's separating it from the 68 673 (open)head.

They do make .040 slugs for a 340. So you don't necessarily need to jump to .060. A quick search KB243-040 - Hypereutectic http://www.summitracing.com/parts/uem-kb243-040

Why is there 440source but no "360source"?

W2, W9 and a fairly good selection of several other are out there for small block. Hell back in the day they had nothing for a big block save a few select factory castings 915's and maxi heads. But even finding maxi heads 30 years ago was very hard and expensive and there were no intakes to go...

    nitrous plate system

back in the old days we made our jets and stacked plates lol. It is all about fuel if it goes lean on you, the motor is gone. I melted a Manley forged piston. Another friend went lean melted all the venturies from the carb and shot a weld through two cyls in the head. Good head gaskets are...

Yes you can probably still see the info a light and mirror c/would probably help. Sometimes I use my cell phones camera it gets good images that I normally can not see. 273 - Basic changes to increase performance

Is your 273 a 4-barrel engine from the factory or a 2-bbl engine you're converting to be a 4-bbl? The reason I ask is the pistons are different. If it's a factory 4-bbl engine it has +/- 10:1 compression w/semi dome, otherwise it has +/- 8.5:1. This is a factor in deciding on a combination that...

When to, or not to rebore an engine

You might want to run the block down to the machine shop and have it checked first before making a concrete decision. Pistons for 273 as far as I know only come in cast and from egge. 2-bbl piston - http://www.egge.com/site/?d=43&dt=1 If I were going to do it. I would use these 4-bbl (commando)...

    **Milling .030 off '920 - 273 heads**

Darwin what head gaskets are you using? you can get them in +/- .025 from the general .040's - that might help all on it's own. Or find the factory correct steel shim head gaskets, but good luck with that. Another problem is the bore size they don't make for a 273 anymore (that I have found) and...

    Engine number decoder

I wouldn't over think this until you get an engine you want. Then address as needed at that point. You just need to factor in an extra +/- $100. And let us know what you have selected so we can help make the proper recommendation. The early converter 67 and earlier had a small register the 68...

How to ID a Small Block Engine Block:

Rumble on 67 and earlier it has all the same info except the pan rail vin all other identifiers are the same. You should look on the left front of block under the head mounting.

    Engine number decoder

Briefly, nearly all LA Small blocks (68-up) have the information right on the side of the block. The displacement and forge date are cast right into them. You can also look on the left front there is a machined pad just below where the cyl head mounts with cid and additional information on it...
