How can i know fore sure if head has been milled

Greetings, I am toying around with the idea of pulling the head off my engine to fix some broken intake studs and while it's down ill probably put a timing chain in, go ahead and drop the electronic ignition and hei setup in, and give the engine a good once over to make sure it stays...

    Any idea what causes this?

I hate to beat a dead horse, but you should still make 100% sure its not a vacuum leak. I dont know how comfortable you are with this kind of stuff, but if you're looking for an easy way, a can of carb cleaner will find a vacuum leak faster than you can imagine. It's not very high tech, and it...

    Hurricane intake

So is the Hurricane intake worth the price of admission? I'm looking at the 2bbl version, and it looks like it accepts the Holley 2300 series carb. I bought one of the 350cfm's from Summit last year and I figure this would be a nice addition along with a pair of Dutra Manifolds.

What RPM's are you running at 60mph?

Greetings, I took the Dart for a spin today to challenge the speedometer with the GPS. As I was driving down the road at 58-63mph, my engine RPM stayed in the neighborhood of 2300-2500. Is that on par with your guy's experience? I have an automatic and unknown rear gear.

OH YEA..... I forgot to tell you in that reply that the valve moves freely. I had thought about that in the past and checked it out. I cant wait to start on it. Over the last few weeks, I have been changing gears on my direction with this car. I just wanted it to be a nice, well thought out...

    Engine Serial

Thank you for the input. According to the link you offered me, as well as a couple other sources, it appears as though the engine is the original one, according to the dates. Now, before the summer, I plan on digging in and making a few changes on the engine. Bill, the engine doesnt rattle...

25 years is a long time, I know, but, if it has been 15,000 miles in that 25 years I'd be shocked.

    Engine Serial

I have a '66 Dart GT. Presumably, this is the original 225 /6 engine. About 25 years ago, my grandfather had the engine "rebuilt" by some sleezeball shadetree mechanic who did not do a very good job. My (great) Uncle says the engine rattled like hell, leaked oil, smoked, and didn't have enough...

    Slant 6 Gas Mileage

Could be a combination of a new, tight engine, and the timing being (way) low on it. Points out of adjustment. Rockers out of adjustment Pull a couple plugs and read the tips. They will quickly tell you if its a tuning problem. A vacuum gauge is not a bad idea as well. Does the engine...

ol' slant is dead... need help!

Take a hacksaw, cut the old oil filter open and have a look at what it caught. You should be able to tell the difference between the shavings the saw put there and what the oil filter has caught. Post pics if you cant determine, one of us has probably seen it before. Can you tell if it is...

    any 225 performance ideas

http://www.jegs.com/i/Comp-Cams/249/K64-247-4/10002/-1 Most people shop here lest I'm mistaking. There's a good start. Lets say for a minute that it costs HALF.... You still won't be happy with its output. Make up numbers..... Your too funny kid. Your setup is still not going to be better...

    any 225 performance ideas

A few counterpoints to consider on the novel that really does seem to prove that there is something out there for anyone. Bill, how long has it taken to build that slant? You have more vision and patience than most do. If he goes down that road it will invariably end 3 years later with nothing...

    any 225 performance ideas

Agreed. The slant will let you down in the power made vs the money and time put in. The argument can be made tht is the most economical and toughest motor ever put on this earth, but performance is something that cannot be done with the word cheap next to it. Buy a 360 w/tranny with 1/3 your...

Carburetor loses prime after 8+ hours

That's a 350cfm. As for the evaporation, you might be right. It was either that or the needle and seat. Wouldn't surprise me if the float level was a little too low allowing the fuel to not be high enough to restart the engine

Carburetor loses prime after 8+ hours

Well I never did install the electric fuel pump, I went ahead and ordered a holley carburetor. I just got it installed a few days ago and it runs better than it ever has in 25 years. I couldn't be happier. It starts up without issue every time no matter how long it's been sitting. It was a...

    Slant 6 Help

In my humble opinion, no matter what you do to the slant to make it faster, you are likely going to be disappointed. Bolt ons only get you so far, and the change in available power is not as significant as you would think for the money spent. This is an economy engine and you should consider...

Carburetor loses prime after 8+ hours

Holy crap! I stopped getting notifications about responses to this thread LOL. Well, I have a holley red pump to go in it, as well as a regulator, which per the instructions for the pump I dont need, but it was already ordered by the time I realized that, so it will get it anyway, no big deal...

    Alternator Bracket

did the slant six use the same alternator bracket throughout its run? Im referring to the bottom pivot mount that the ignition coil also mounts to. Carburetor loses prime after 8+ hours

I just replaced my base gasket with a thick one. As i said earlier, i HAD been running a thin paper gasket and it was causing my pcv vacuum to bearly pull anything. So the whole cabin would smell of crankcase fumes, which is uninviting to say the least. So i bought a new gasket, which happened...

Carburetor loses prime after 8+ hours

OK so I just went out to the car and clocked my fuel line off the carb to give it some elevation. That seems like a good idea. I also took the line loose, and turned the engine over. the fuel is in the line, just not the carb. When i pump the gas, im getting 2 squirts from the jets and then...
