Very Low Oil Pressure in New Engine

Thanks again everyone, last update... Hot, Idle, Pressure - life is good! I pulled #2 main and #4 rod, the bearings looked like they did when I put it together. Got 75 PSI with the drill, put it together and it was 80 PSI cold at about 1500. I used no washers and red loctite.

Very Low Oil Pressure in New Engine

It's solved! I am the luckiest guy I know Anyone in the Maryland area would like to come by and kick me in the balls, please feel free You CAN pull the pan in an early A with Doug's headers and it's not that big of a job The god damn oil pump was about to fall off! I swear I torqued it, I...

Very Low Oil Pressure in New Engine

There is a gasket under the head of the ported bolt and another on the ported bolt between the block and the adapter. The last one is the large diameter one between the block and the adapter. Found my notebook, in the glovebox. Who would have thought? Measuring the the bearings in the...

Very Low Oil Pressure in New Engine

Good point on the upper end oiling. I was assuming some would get past the cam bearing, but it's not grooved so I guess not. Took apart the filter this morning. No chunks of bearing material with a readable part number. There was a little metal in the canister, but nothing I would get...

Very Low Oil Pressure in New Engine

It's possible, but the pickup was new (as was the pump and pan) and I did clean it anyway. Damn phone takes better pictures than any camera I've owned. If only it could diagnose oiling issues... Thanks, I just found this pic from the assembly. Phew!

Very Low Oil Pressure in New Engine

So with the magic of iPhone I was able to get its camera in the distributor hole and snap a few pictures. In one you can see the plug is still in place, but it also appears that a piece of the block may have gone missing. I don't have another block handy to go look at, but I am missing the...

Very Low Oil Pressure in New Engine

I wonder if the cam could walk far enough to uncover the hole in the cam bearing? I guess it would leak enough pressure even if it moved just a little. Nope. I've only seen those once, odd things and I assume would require the same oiling mods as a roller.

I did. I also pulled the plugs out to clean it, but I don't remember anything I could have forgotten or done wrong there.

Thanks for all the replies. Melling High Volume. I tried 20-50 grasping at straws. No noise at all, sounded great. The rockers were tapping, but it is a solid cam. If I could get the pan out in the car it would be out already, but I am hoping to avoid that. When I changed...

Very Low Oil Pressure in New Engine

The engine is a 71 318, RHS X-Heads, KB pistons, a Lunati cam, Hughes rockers, Melling HV oil pump, Kevoco Pan and pickup. The typical machine work was done and every clearance was checked when I assembled it. All the rods and mains were between .0015 and .002, but I don’t remember the...

    KB399 Pistons and RHS Heads

I'll have to figure a way to measure that, but I don't think the plug is very close at all.

    KB399 Pistons and RHS Heads

This is probably not a very common combination as most people wouldn't consider RHS heads for a 318 in the first place, but that's a story for a different thread. The question is whether or not the domed Keith Black pistons will work with the as-cast RHS X-Heads. The answer is kinda. There...

Screwup after screwup... what to do?

Won't the Dakota manifolds work on both sides? Regardless, why not use the old 318 manifold until you find another suitable manifold? You'll lose some power, but it's not going to hurt anything and it'll get you on the road now.

Computing Compression Ratio - check my math?

Therein lies my problem. I get way to anal about this stuff at times. I posted that at 12:30 last night, I should have been sleeping for over an hour. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something major. Thanks

Computing Compression Ratio - check my math?

I didn't use KB's calculator, those are either the actual measured cc's or calculated from actual spacial measurements like the deck height. For the gasket volume I used a gasket bore of 4.170 and a compressed thickness of .032 which comes out to 7.1 cc's. Bore and stroke are 3.940 and 3.310...

Computing Compression Ratio - check my math?

This is the first time I'm using a dome piston and want to be sure my procedure and math are correct. The engine in question is a .030 over 318 (3.940 bore) and the pistons are KB 399's: 65 - Head CC 2.2 - Deck (piston is .011 in the hole at TDC) 7.1 - Compressed Gasket Volume 1 - Above Top...

Worth it to build my 273?

If you build a 273 the same way you'd build a 360, the 273 will not make as much power. If you build a 273 to take advantage of its strengths, (lighter components so it's easier to spin faster, smaller size makes it easier to build adequate heads, smaller bore and closed chamber heads that are...

    Head dilemma

I was in a very similar situation last week and called Brian. I have a set of small port heads I wanted to use, but the bottom line is that to get them to flow anywhere near a set of RHS heads would cost considerably more than getting the RHS heads in the first place. If your porter can...

    340Help!!

Pull the valve covers, crank the engine over by hand and see if all the valves are opening and closing like they should. You might have dropped a pushrod, wiped the cam or something else. What are the symptoms now? What exactly were you expecting and what isn't it doing? What does your...

    273 Head Gaskets

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to wind up going with Cometic, I can't find them anywhere else. I'm not concerned with the compression, more with pre-ignition and detonation.

    S6/318 opinion

If money is really the issue, get another slant from a scrap yard, or better yet from someone doing a V8 conversion. If you go with the 318, the power increase is very nice. But in addition to the engine and transmission you'll need headers or exhaust manifolds, an exhaust system and a k-frame...

    U heads

Thanks for the info Hotlines. I got a quick look at an engine tonight that was supposed to have had W2 on it, but had these heads instead. Being that the car hasn't run in 30 years they could be T/A's and they just got the terminology wrong. I'll have to go back when I can pull a valve...

    U heads

These are supposed to be 340 heads, but instead of an X or a J there is a U cast into the area between the plugs. Any ideas?
