Is it a AX15 or a NV3500? The 3500 is a large trans, and will need a bunch of tunnel mods. If it is out of a Dakota first gear will not be as bad as one from a 1500. Have you looked in some yards local to you, you can find the 15s and the 3500s somewhat easy. (lots of Dakotas in yards)

A 727 for $85 is a good deal. Just make sure the case is not cracked or that water has sat inside it and rusted the inside components.

You should be able to look at you bell and see if it has the holes for the 4spd before you pull the 3spd. If it does your good to go you will need a different slip yoke for the 4 gear.
