looking for some pipe that is 1/2 wide ... went to Home Depot ...their 1/2 inch pipe is .8 inches wide ....
their 3/8 copper pipe is 1/2 .... you think copper can be chromed? Or where is a dealer for 3/8 steel pipe???

Try a good hardware store if you can't find anything at Home Repo (Depot) or Lowes.

What are you trying to do?

make a custom piece for my cuda... but it will need to be chromed...can copper be chromed?

Sounds like you are trying to equate on O.D. with an I.D. measurement. Chances are a 3/8 steel pipe (if there is such a thing) will be larger than 1/2" O.D.
Try the Ace hardware, plumbing aisle. Some of those sink or toilet pipes are already chrome and may come close to the size you want.
If that doesn't work, I'll bet that Leanna can put a chrome powder coat on copper...

Try a commercial steel supplier like ALRO or a structural fabrication shop. They'll have scraps of the stuff. Yes copper can be nicely chromed. The base coating under chrome is copper. If what you need is .5 od then 3/8" pipe should get you close. Local hardware store should have that. Dan

The copper is nickel plated, and the nickel is then chrome plated. That's the secret to chroming aluminum, btw...

are you looking for 1/2" OD? if so look for tubing which is measured OD which can be bought in stainless - looks pretty good polished - thin walled and nicely bent with a hand bender

pipe is measured ID (approx. measure depending on wall thickness)

hope this helps - Jimmy

You can get chrome tubing in various sizes at a plumbing supply house. Pipe is measure by nominal I.D. not O.D. you may need to look for Tubing.

1/2" pipe is not 1/2" because the 1/2 is the NPF (Nominal Pipe Size) basically the inside diameter of the pipe. Add to that number the wall thickness to get OD. So a 1/2 NPF Schedule 80 pipe has a wall thickness of .147 inches. So .5 + 2(.147) = .794 OD.

Now if you want 1/2 inch OD the closest you are going to get is 1/4" Schedule 80 or Schedule 80S. This pipe has an inside diameter of .25 and a wall thickness of .119. So that gives us .25 + (2*.119) = .488 OD.

HVAC copper tubing is also another possible option if you can find it in a straight tube instead of a coil. HVAC copper is different size than plumbing copper. Stainless steel is a good option since it won't need plated, has far more strength than copper. There is also 3/8 iron pipe but Lowes only carries it in 12 inch lengths. I am sure that there must be some place to buy longer 3/8" pipe.

I originally thought that you were going to build a 1/2 pipe for us to come over and skateboard...

Ace Hardware, go back to all the little drawers they have in the bolt dept. They have thick steel spacer in all sizes, not thin junk.

Yep, it can be done and it will look good too. I'll even mask off all the threads. Just take it out of the box and install it on your caaa--- plumbing. :-D

Thanks for the mention C!
