AN fittings are all new to me so please bare with me.

I am trying to route some trans cooling lines to an aluminum radiator I picked up. For the radiator I have, on summit's website it states..

"Cooler bosses fitted with 1/4 NPT fittings"

When I look at the radiator they are female inverted flare fittings though. I have a hard line with inverted flare fittings that threads in there just fine, but I am looking to convert it to an AN fitting so I can run some Aeroquip lines. etc. I can't seem to find a true 1/4 inverted flare to AN fitting.. do they exist?

I tried this fitting.. it threads in a couple turns then gets tight?? Should I be using this and just tighten it up.. Just doesn't seem right.

So I am confused and not sure whats my best solution at this point.. HELP

I'd call Summit and ask them what's up. If the description says 1/4" NPT for the cooler fittings, that's what it should be.

Here are some pics.. They are the best I could do with my cell.

Let me know what you think..

That is most certainly a female inverted flare, not 1/4 NPT. I can't tell what the size is from just a picture but it's probably a 5/16 or 1/2 inverted flare fitting. Here's a link to all of Summits inverted flare to AN adapters. Summit's customer service is stellar. If you give them a call, they may well send you the adapters you need for free. Tell them exactly what part number you ordered, the description on their website and tell them you can send them a pic. Make sure you call tech support, not sales. I hope you didn't try to crank the 1/4 NPT fitting in as that will ruin the threads. Here's a pic of what you need to make this work:

Edit: I'd also try to get rid of that gunk in the one picture at the bottom of the hole. That could cause a leak.

Here is a link for all inverted flare to AN fittings.

What size tubing is it? 5/16 or 3/8? Hmmmm...that link did not want to work...

If you want to know for sure what you have, go to the local hardware store and they have cheap brass fittings that you can use to see what you have. They won't have AN fittings but they do have flared and NPT fittings. It's cheaper to spend a little for a fitting at the hardware store to double check what you have than it is to find out you ordered the wrong one and have to send it back.

Summit is the best place to buy them, just be sitting down when they give you the price, some of the smaller adapter fittings can be very high priced. The 1/8" NPT to -4 AN for my gauges was like $25 each but the one I used for the block was only $4 same size just a different angle.

The 1/4 npt fitting I have begins to thread in but gets tight so I didnt not crank on it at all. The Inverted flare fitting I had threaded right in but I am not sure what size tubing it was.

I assumed I was just looking for a 1/4 inverted flare to AN fitting.. I can't seem to find one anywhere.

Inverted flare fittings are measured different than NPT. OD vs. ID. You won't find a 1/4" inverted flare to AN. Bring your fitting that fits to the hardware store like Blown mentions and match it up and take note of the size.

nice.. I figured something was up since my internet searches came up empty. I will get to the store and figure out what size it is and post back here when I do...

Thanks

One other tip: JIC hydraulic fittings will seal to AN fittings, even though they're slightly different thread profiles and AN fittings have more precise tolerances.
