I just picked up a 64 LA 904 from another member. He didn’t know anything about it except for a tag zip tied to it - “Worked when pulled”. So, I understand it’s a core and it will eventually get rebuilt. Other than knowing it’s a pushbutton trans, has the rear pump with a rear support ball bearing and the ball and trunnion output flange, I am kind of clueless about pushbutton trans. Please school me on them and in particular this 64 trans.
 
Hey Don

The 64 is a dual pump so there are 2 intakes. When you replace the filter, you'll need to ensure it has the 2 corresponding holes.

The second pump would actually allow you to pop start the car unlike the later automatics.

The parking lever is a physical sprag bock in that extension housing. So you need the typewriter and the second cable to actuate that.

You can't change the valve body on it. Have to stay with a pushbutton valve body. Actually, you can, but it requires a bunch of welding and modification that is just not worth it

I knew this 65 transmission I had at one time had this but didn’t know if the 64 had it or not.

I don’t want to change the valve body as I want to leave it a push button. My ultimate plan is to mate it to my 318 with the D66 dual quads in my 47.

I’ve read somewhere that if the earlier front pump is swapped with a 68-later (due spline count), converter selection is basically unlimited. True?

Not sure on the pump swap. I've stayed with reconditioned, stock converters.

My ultimate plan is to mate it to my 318 with the D66 dual quads in my 47.

That sounds cool
 
To change front pump, you need to change both drums and input shaft also to get different spline count for later convertors.
They must be a matched set up.

I just spoke with Sean at Dynamic Converters. They built the 42RH that is going in my 65 Dart wagon. Anyway they will be rebuilding my 64 904 to include beefing it up where necessary and new drums, pump etc to take a later converter. They will also build a new 9.5 inch converter of about a 3000 stall at the same time

IDK about a rebuild kit per se for the push button 904 like the one I have. You might give them a call or I can check for you when wife and I drop my transmission off next week
