1965 Dart GT conv.

-
Am actually only doing just the 65 Dart right now. Nothing going on with the 47 at this time!
Ok!

The oil pan was so filled with greasy oil and hardened dirt on the outside so I needed a knife and two hours to get rid of it. Next is a parts washer!

Why does the oil and dirt get so hard? It's like concrete!!!

The instrument panel is done. The pad is in primer and will be shot tomorrow. Then the assembly can take place!

Finally the instrument panel is done. Clear coat with 88% shine on the lower part. The upper parts and the defroster outlets is painted with 16% shine. Next is to find the special nuts holding the speaker in the recessed area under the outlet. But the assembly can start. Yihaa!

Finally some progress. The instrument panel with the plastic ornaments is done except the instrumen cluster. I needed to check the gauges. @sgrip65 , I might have a fuel gauge for you.
The switch and levers for heat/defroster is restored and I even found a dash light since it's a convertible. I haven't found the screws holding the speaker. Due to that reason the defroster outlets can't be bolted to the dash.

I aslo added the camshaft and the chain and sprockets. Next is to find correct bolts for the water pump.

Next will be the dash pad in shape.

Hi Ulf. I have found what I needed regarding the gauge. Got it from a guy that lives four miles from me. Don't know what happened with the other ones, but this one is working fine. I appreciate your help. Looking great on your dash. Sgrip65

Did that gauge showed up?

Hi Ulf. Did not see anything, but will let you know. The one you sent a few months ago didarrive, but failed.....not your fault. I checked all the wiring, grounds, IVR, the Printed Circuit Board for shorts, and the entire wiring harness. The wiring harness was checked prior to installation. Anyway, I found one near my home from a fellow Mopar guy, and it was in his drawer in a box. He said he was never going to use it, so he gave it Have a Merry Christmas. Sgrip65

Finally the greasy valve covers, oil filter bracket, pcv valve and the oil pan was ready to pick up. They turned brand new at Umea Motorslip. Excellent service.
I got a bad call today. The supplier of pistons couldn't make it until May next year@
Anyone having a set of 40 over pistons for a 2 bbl 273 for sale?
The speedometer looks not so good. How do I get rid of the frost on it?

There is a company making decals that apply right over the face of the speedo and smaller gauges for (I believe) the 65 Dart and many other Mopars. I sent them images for both MPH and KPH. You have to lightly sand the face so the decal doesn’t have any bumps or imperfections when applied. I ordered a set of KPH decals for a 65 Dart, installed them and later sold the cluster. I will see if I can find the vendor.

Hi Ulf. There is a company in (I think) Tennessee that provides an overhaul kit with Egge pistons. They are not called Egge, but that is what they are. They will sell the pistons separately (half-hemi.) I did mine at 40 over. I will get that name and number to you when I get home later. Looks good. Sgrip65

Finally the dash is ready. Next is to go throughthe wiring harness and mount it on the backside with easy access. The instrument cluster is checked and everything works.
Then I can add the defroster hoses and speaker and we're ready to go.

Wow! Nice setup, Ulf. I’m going to copy your idea when I do mine. BTW, I finally got my left rear quarter on this week. I’m going to make a post showing progress.

Hi ulf. After our move, I have, temporarily, misplaced my 65 Dart information file which contains where I bought those pistons. When I find it, I will send the name of the company where I bought them. Sorry for now....it will show up. Sgrip65

Finally the wiring harness is done. Found ot one part (between the power top switch and the wiring behind the kick panel is gone so I need to fabricate a new one.
The rest is there and clamped like the assembly guys did it.
Next was to restore the console. Since black is history and red is the way to go it needed a new shot of paint inkl clear coat. Turned out great so next will be the steering column and the steering wheel.

Very Nice Ulf. Did you have your center console chrome redone? Looks real nice. Sgrip65

No, actually I found it in a rear ended car while I was doing the Dart Charger hardtop. I had two in excellent condition and I rechromed one of them and this is the other one. Will fit perfect in the convertible.

Looking good indeed! I like the dual port VW head used as a stand. Lots to learn by looking at your pictures. Thanks.

So next piece restore is the steering column. I had two of them but the red one was better. I found out that the clips that holds the wiring from the turn signal swich is a two piece unit. Actually I have never seen it before. It's even wrong on my restored Dart Charger!! Hmmm!
This column has a Swedish dealer installed steering lock that was mandatory in Sweden in 1965.
The pipe and the upper parts ready for sanding and paint.

Ulf.....Interesting on the locking steering column and the two piece steering column wiring connector. I did not know this either after two restorations. Good to know. Sgrip65

Wow you are gonna have a Dodge dealership soon with a bunch of 65 Darts in the lot!!! Nice work Ulf

Last night I got the radio from my friend Ralf. An early test this morning for light and funktion was the plan. Next was to mount it and polish the knobs.
Next was to continue with the steering column. I needed to continue with the worst pne. Could not dis-assemble the steering lock! Sanding and primer was done tonight.
But the steering shaft was something else. I wonder how many dealerships or owner who greased the rubber grommet on the column??

Finally the next step is taken. Loaded up tonight with the body on the trailer and all the doors, fenders, hood, trunk lid and front valence panel. Pick up will be mid January.
So now next step will be to finish the steering column and the hydraulic system for the top.

Love progress!

Finall the steering column is painted, everything is assembled and a new switch. A big difference compare to how it looked from the beginning.
Next is the cracked steering wheel. Will take some time but soon it will be done too.
