1966 Valiant Sedan V8 Swap (Victoria)

-
Looking great MMike! Wife and I are heading home in October for a visit. Might just swing by the hill while visiting daughter. She is still in Mamouth Springs! Victoria be rocking! Blessings on your brother and you. Every time I read one of your posts that include him I think of my brother and what we went thru during his illness. Heartfelt support for ya.

Hey Mike, I see from the picture that you're running an aluminum water pump... What kind/style of radiator are you going to use with that???? If you're going to run a 70's or later radiator, you should be able to use molded hoses from a 70 or later a-body to work... If you're going to run a 60's style radiator then you won't be able to use molded hoses... :BangHead:

However if you're going to run a 60's style radiator, I would change to the cast iron water pump so you could run the 60's style molded radiator hoses...

It also looks like you have the 60's style alternator mounting bracket... I'm not sure if the pulleys will line up with that one or you may want to look into using the 70 and later alternator mounting bracket...

If you stay with the aluminum water pump, you may want to consider changing the alternator bracket to the 70' and later style and also running the 70 and later style water pump pulley so the belts will line up properly...

If you run the cast iron water pump, then go with the 60's style bell shaped water pump pulley for the alternator belt to line up with the other pulleys...
thank you for giving me all this super tec help, I will get my radiator out and show you and I will take all the advice I can get .
I will do this today, pictures of my radiator will be posted :thankyou:

No problem... If I see what vintage of radiator you are running, I can give you advice on how to set up the front end of the engine so you can run molded hoses and get the pulleys lined up properly....

I just need to know if you're using a 60's style radiator or 70 and late style radiator... Then set up the front of the engine for that time period...

Here it is, it is, out of Tony Fields 67 Barracuda he had reconditioned and decided to go with a champion radiator, hope it's not to tall, nice 3 row

That has the "more rounded" top tank on it... The late 60's style radiator... a fine choice if I do say so myself.... (Richard Jeni lobster joke reference....)

I would then set up the front of the engine for a late 60's style radiator...

What timing chain cover are you using??? Can you post a picture of that???

I recommend using the cast iron water pump... Then use the alternator mounting brackets from a 67 - 69 small block...

If you don't have them or can't find a used set, you can get them new at a reasonable price, mancini has them for $40 and they include the bolts and spacers...

Alternator Mounting Kit

For pulleys, you want the ones from a 67 - 69 small block... I bought a set from this guy a while back for my younger son's valiant that we are building, he seems to have quite a bit of stuff, contact him and see if he has another set of these...

[FOR SALE] - Pre 70 Crank/Water Pump Pulley Set

You want the bell shaped water pump pulley like in the link above that I just listed ^^^^^, not the one with the angle like this one... See how it has the angle in the taper from the mounting hole diameter to the belt groove, this is the one that is for the aluminum water pump, not the cast iron one....

Water Pump Pulley w/o AC

If you’re running that radiator, I can give you all the pulleys and brackets from a 69 318 I have here that came out of a Cuda. Are you running power steering or manual? That will make a difference in the crank pulley.

I’m running a 1966 22” 273 radiator in my 66, might have even bought it here on FABO many years ago....it has the rounded stock top tank. I then had a high flow efficiency 2-core installed and the lower hose outlet moved to the other side so I could run the 1970-up water pump and pulleys...my car never gets over 190° and that’s with a stock 4’blade fan!

Would you have an extra timing tab??? If he's running the 70 and later timing chain cover, then he can just put the cast iron water pump on it and install a timing tab to get a reference for his TDC... Then he can find TDC and make a paint mark on the harmonic balancer to line up with TDC on the timing tab so the lower radiator hose won't block the timing mark....

That would save him from having to change the timing chain cover and having the little gasket ends on the oil pan... It would be much cleaner...

Staying Manual for sure, PM me so we can get together on the :)
