1968 Barracuda Notch 340

-
The Canton oil filter plate took care of the oil leak. Spun up the 340 today for about 15 minutes 2k to 3k rpms. 175 degrees at the manifold sender via digital thermometer, this translated to 3/4 of needle travel between cold and hot on the factory gauge. Factory Oil pressure gauge almost pegged the whole time. Making progress. Running 2 breathers right now, think it's now time for pcv. I finally got to feel throttle response sitting in the car watching gauges while my nephew scouted for leaks. Man, what a sound, and super responsive... there's just no better drug.

Yesterday I buttoned the steering and torsion bar up, got the car on the ground and cleaned up. Some friends I Mountain bike with came to the shop for a listen then we took a trail ride. Ive had bad luck in the past with o ring type water necks, this one from JEGS is currently leak free. Im thinking about installing pedals, brakes and a clutch now for a drive.

Getting started on rear brakes. Factory skinny brakes are what came in the car. Diff has been shortened along with BBP Yukon axles. The guy at Az. Diff swears 2.5" will work with Yukon flange back spacing. Got these backing plates from his scrap pile and one side installed last night. These are 11x2.5 so ordered 1 drum for a test fit. Should have today. Fingers crossed.

Ok guys, weigh in. 11 x 2.5 brake shoes are in place ( dummied with wire) shoe ends are secure in cylinder piston slots. 11" drum ( I used 1970 Satellite for ordering) seems to fit fine, spins freely with 0 interference. Check out pics, does the drum/ backing plate interface look right to you?

Lug holes are larger than my 1/2" lugs. Did these B body drums come with differing lug diameters?

Cheers
Tim

Last weekend my youngest son and I finished media blasting and painting used parts. Found e brake levers and spreaders via Mancini, needed one brake shoe guide plate, Advanced Auto had exactly one which was shocking. Got cylinders, shoes, and hardware kits today, should be installing guts this weekend

Rear brakes are complete, no hiccups other than a Left adjuster was packaged in my Right adjuster kit. I went with a new master cylinder from Classic, reservoir for front ( disc) is larger and has a natural gray anodize. No provision for the factory dust boot so I drilled and tapped for that. New front ss brake lines are in from Classic. Im waiting on rear ss brake lines, p valve, t block, feeder hose and distribution block, also from Classic. Refurbished Pedal assembly installed last week. Continuing fit up. If I choose to actually drive this thing before tear down and paint all I need is a fuel cell, finish brakes and a clutch.

Axle housing was shortened a couple years ago, coupled with my 57 year old memory banks produced a nice surprise when mocking up the SS brake lines. What's Hot Rodding without mods right? It's comforting having the cam broken in and knowing I can start the motor for an open header party whenever I feel like an adrenaline jag. Hotchkis front sway bar is in after shortening the end links, just need to weld in brackets. Front to rear brake lines are back ordered and am trying to talk myself into a rear sway bar.

Works been crazy so Cuda time has been spotty. K member has been cleaned and sway bar repositioned for tack welding. With the rear axle shortened, modifying brake lines became necessary. I straightened one bend out in the left rear ss brake tube, the same bend got placed closer to the middle of the car so the tube clears the u bolts. I'm bribing my sheet metal guy with $500 up front towards the custom nose to get on his schedule.

Front of car is off, custom nose piece should begin today. I decided to dig back into the " body work" on my fiberglass plenum cover. My body work sucks, but this is conceptual so I squirted the Chrysler metallic gray body color anyway then laid out my first graphic idea with tape, I'm looking for a strobe type graphic that may have been factory back in the day. Liked it enough to go with painting in the second body color Crazy Cuda green. Ive got some cuda 340 decals being made, I'll stick one across the lower green stripe

Work has begun on the custom nose piece and fender to grill trim

April 25 2021, last day my sheet metal guy touched this car. The Cuda is now back at my place and I'm picking up where he left off on this custom nose. All done waiting.

What happened? Did he give up on it?
Yeah, he's a friend and I'd rather keep the friendship, just need the car/hobby back. I can finish the nose and keep going. I'm this far on fit up so I think i'll go the rest of the way with a clutch, finish brake lines and a fuel cell to road test. Then tear it down again for paint.

Got the nose fitted and some welding done. Next will be the addition of the bottom return so nose can bolt to the upper grill span. Low backs gotta get job strong again

looking good so far. will you just narrow the bumper to fit snug to the fenders or will you also make shallow recesses in the fenders to tuck the bumper ends in slightly for a more factory look?
neil.

Thanks Neil. Ive considered both approaches. At the bumpers return ends the top edge is much further from the fender than the bottom edge, it's a head tweaker , probably be a tuck with some fill pieces. You can see at the bumper mid point Ive already closed the bumper angle to match the grill so what's more cutting and welding right?
