1970 340 air cleaner dimensions?

I'm considering converting my '72 air cleaner to a '70. Anybody got measurements of the opening? I think its around 1 3/4 x 4 with a 1/4 radius.

Thanks! That opening is narrower than I thought at 1 3/8". Now if I can just bring myself to cutting up a perfectly good '72 air cleaner.
And you do realize there is 2 openings with both openings having a diffusor.
 
I bought a candidate off of ebay years ago. It was cheap. It is basically the same other than the openings and the diffusers. I don't know what it came off of but it was cheap. It has the same lid and basic shape. I'll do the same as you prescribe and probably sell the real one as I am not in original restoration mode.
 
There has to be a better candidate for sure.
I'm looking but I don't see any inexpensive ones these days. The '72 trap door air cleaners don't seem to be selling for more than a few hundred bucks...maybe $300 restored.

Ya, I did a little looking too. Seems if it has an opening for a four barrel and has mopar attached to its name, its worth its weight in gold.
 
I’m going to attempt to draw one in ONSHAPE, to make a mold. So I can make a carbon fiber one. Will have to 3D print a multi-piece mold. Picking up rusty one this weekend to measure.

Would a carbon fiber mold that was formed to the inside of the oval openings be strong enough to hammer the lips into shape? If so, I would be interested in one or two if you make some.
 
Is the 72 the same dimensions around? etc. Is it a matter of painting it black? wasnt there a cheesy black repop of the 70 a few years back made of plastic?

Same diameter and height. Some of the 72-73 air cleaners had vertical ribs an inch or so high that come up from the bottom edge. There was a fiberglass or plastic repop years ago, and they are about as hard to find as a real one.

I thought about routing an oval hole (forstner bit for the holes) into some hardwood and then cutting a radius around the hole. It could then be used as a form. That might be option#2.
I'm a little worried about tigging thin old metal so the option is to use one of those flare dies and cut the holes into the air cleaner than just tig in the upper and lower straight pieces. The other challenge if you make a whole piece to be tigged in is getting it bent to the 8.5" radius. Dealing with the existing hole is another challenge. I dunno....it all seems like a lot of work but some times I like a challenge not that I don't have enough to do right now.

The side without the snorkle will be easier than the snorkle side. There's not much way around making a new piece with the oval formed, to mig or tig in. If you could get a nice sized chunk of Ironwood to make the wooden die with, it may hold up pretty well to hand forming the oval opening. I'd like to do it with metal if I could find a fab shop to bend a piece of maybe 3/8 flat bar to then whittle on.
