I am going to look at a 1971 Dart tomorrow and the owner says it is a real GT model. The car has the front disc dual piston Kelsey Hayes brakes and a 318 engine. If they did make a GT in 1971 how can I verify that this is one? Thanks for any help that you can provide.

yes they do make a 71 gt, ive got one and it says it rite on my title, mines got factory 318, daul exhaust, buckets, air and disc brakes, as far as telling like i said mine says it rite on the title...

Yes - A65 option package in 71 on the 2dr swinger only.

Has GT emblems and bucket seats as the only parts of the option.

Wont the second letter of the vin be a P someone correct me if i am wrong. That is the way it is on my 69 dart gt The vin starts off LP23 if it is the same in 71 i dont know though but i would check the vin and starts out the same way The P stood for premium package and the gt option was the premium trim package for the darts i believe. Hope this helps Justin

The A65 option code will be on the Fender Tag and the Build Sheet. It was only available on the Dart Custom 2 door. As for options there were many and there were few. The 1971 Dart GT emblems will be on the rockers below the Door in front. IF the emblems are missing: They are next to impossible to find. They are 1971 ONLY and as such will not be repoped anytime I think. I do have 1 set if anyone knows a repoper that is willing to do a LOW sales run. Please check my site for more info than you probably wanted! www.7071dartgt.net. Later Bruce B.

A65 on the fender tag denotes "GT" package. Also, the "R" in the vin indicates a Windosr build.

Mine is a 318, 2-bbl, A904, console shift with buckets, A/C (removed by me), PS with Rim-Blow steering wheel (removed for future restoration), 8 3/4" with 3.23:1 sure-grip, and vinyl top.

Upgrades include: electronic ignition, 2 1/4" dual exhaust (manifolds) with FlowMaster 40s, 1970 SBP Rallye Wheels, 1970 style Twin Hood Scoops, headlight relay wiring upgrade, and bypassing of the "Ammeter" and wiring connections.

Future plans: Custom dash/cluster (original to be stored), paint (probably Hemi Orange), vinyl top removed, body side molding removed, replace side markers with '68 style, gloss black tail stripe, body colored bumpers (originals to be stored), and hood/cowl blackout in gloss black).

Now I'm off to win the Lottery!!

This is the reference I used that says Swinger. No mention of a 2 dr custom, maybe the 2 dr "swinger special"?.

Just curious Rob. Do you think they used the word Swinger as a general reference to two door models?

Grant,

Look on the second link left side, bottom of the page. It has the code and the applicable model. The last link has the Dart line up/model for 1971. I didn't just make it up. 8)

I'd be interested to see what the first two digits of the VIN for a Dart GT.

Hope all is cool with you.

Starting 1970 Chrysler still called the 2 Door Hardtop A body "Dart" but the Swinger name was pretty generic. The only real differences in the models were: LL23 = Dart & Swinger Special (ie; Cheap), LH23 = Swinger & Custom, LM23 = Swinger 340. No more was the Dart GT it's own line = LP23, Now just an Option Package (A65) only on a Dart Custom not on Swinger. But what the hay! Still same car LH23!

I really appreciate everybody who contributed answers to my question!!! My next step is to make an offer on the car. I will let you know how I come out. I'll post pics if I get it.

Thanks Again!!!

I was relaying what was in the dealer data and salesman books for the 71 model year. There was no mention of the "custom" line in 1971. I looked in my Parts book and under the "H" price class designator --- Swinger and Custom. Interesting, and not the first time the dealer order books weren't exactly correct.

In the 1970 Dealer Data and Salesman guide, there is the Custom line. The Custom line is the base for the GT package in 70 in each source.

So true! If I had a $1.00 for every time someone told me "Chrysler didn't make/do/offer that", My GT would be restored by now! Thanks for checking you books for us! I have been researching the 1970-1971 Dart GT's since I found my 1st one in 1998 or so. No one had a Registry for the 70-71's so I started one. So far so good...... Not too many left it seems. Now; If we can just get the production numbers confirmed.
