1974 Duster

Looks like classic manifolds will not work with the magnum engines due to port mismatch, questions-

1) does anyone make a-body magnum headers?

2) are all magnum manifolds the same configuration? jeep vs truck/durango.

Not sure if anyone makes what you're looking for or about other manifolds that will work. However, you could make your own headers - I think Summit or someone sells a kit. It's on the pretty hard scale to do (never done it myself - but saw it done by a friend of mine some years back) you need the plate that bolts up to the head and a ton of bent and straight header pipes. If you go with 3/8" plate they wont warp. You could get the flat stock, scribe out the holes from the manifold gasket and grind till you get it right - drilling the bolt holes, or have the plate water jetted. Then with the motor in the frame start piecing the pipe on (tack welds) till you get what you want and then take to a pro that has the best equipment to complete the job correctly. Then, have them ceramic coated. It's a ton of work and not real cheap to have done, but your alternatives are restricted by lack of engine and body type match.

Gotta ask - since progress has been so fast - do you have a full time job ?

Yes along with a daughter half the week and a great girlfriend who helped a bit on the car too.

I use to work in the automotive trade, getting work done pronto was a fact of life.

Being organized and laying the groundwork down before working helps too.

I think I'm going to work with manifolds for now- Online is a great dyno report (Mopar Action perhaps?) of a crate 360/300hp motor run with everything from 318 manfolds up to top of the line headers.

25 hp & 25 lb/ft of torque was the maximum difference between best and worst. I can live with that. I'll see if I can find the link and post it.

If I can wedge the magnum manifolds in there I'll be fine and the 5.2 will flow less than the 5.9 dynoed.

Going with a 5.9 Magnum, picked up 5.9 and 518 combo. Going to start off with a carb intake and go to fuel injection when time permits.

Good luck with your Duster Gary. She going to be a fine looking machine when you are done.
Thank you for your Turbo website. Your site was like the Bible to me when I was building my 89' Turbo Daytona.

Thanks! I have the 5.9 and carb intake for it, going to put them in sometime in the spring I think. Starting work on a new garage so it might be busy though.

Settled on white stripes too, the black just don't do anything for me with this color combo.

No problem! I hope to do some updating next month.

Spring update- THe Duster is out the garage and on the road!

Work has started! I have the 96 5.9 I picked up last year fired up and running on the garage floor and it sounds sweet! Just going to install a fresh timing chain and drop it in.

Decided to run a 727 trans, I have one out in the garage that needs a freshen up.

Checked out a car with flat black stripes, might go that route instead of white or gloss black.

Update- The 360 was in poor condition internally (one hole down 100 psi!) so I had planned on rebuilding but just got a line on a stroked 318.

If I can pickup the 390 engine and trans I will do so which will get me on the road faster. While the motor is out the body shop will work its magic in the bay.

Just ordered a front sway bar kit from Summit Racing, $199 shipped.

The 390 fell through =(

Back to the 360 magnum...

Just ordered a set of leaf springs from Springs & Things, nice people to do business with.

http://www.espo.com/

Less than $300 shipped for a pair of XHD with an extra 1" arch.

I just bought my Xhd's from mancini racing for $260 to the door.

Odd, When I checked with them and they wanted $320 plus shipping.

$30 isn't enough to get my shorts in a twist, I have wasted more than that on beer in a day.

The 360 is starting to come together- I found a 380hp roller cam a few days ago, the shortblock was stripped down last night and I'm ordering a set of Enginequest Magnum/LA heads from Hughes engines when I get home today.

Update-

Spent all day on the car yesterday.

Clean and painted the headrests yesterday, installed. Installed the seat back releases.

Installed sound deadener under the carpet and kickpanels, tucked some over the rear tire area too.

Removed the Dana cruise control setup and lubed the speedo cable (not 100% but much better than before, now it only jumps around a little bit)

Changed the pittman arm on the steering box and adjust the box again, much better but the box has some shaft play on the bottom I think.

Now that the arm is done assembled the horn button for the tuff wheel.

Added some polyurethane roof sealer to some seams in the floor where a patch was done on the passenger side- A damp sponge works GREAT for adding a "undercoated" texture to what you are working on and the sealer doesnt stick to it.

Ordered Enginequest magnum heads from Hughes on Friday with LA bolt pattern.

Pulled the transmission to replace freeze plugs on the back of the motor (did 6 total) refreshed the transmission while it was out.

5 clutches in the front drum and modified the valve body.

If I have time, I'll add a Edelbrock intake next week.

Heads are in from Hughes.

Trans shifts perfect, very pleased.

Maybe get the intake on next, do valve guide seals at the same time.

Pulled the intake and valve covers last night- Not sludged up but lots of flakey oil deposts.

I'm going to vacuum everything out tonight and start changing the valve guide seals. Intake is an old Edelbrock Performer and I have either a Carter 500 cfm or 750 cfm carb to install.

Or a Thermoquad off my GTX I have not used in a few years ;-)

Engine bay gets painted when the Magnum engine goes in this fall.

Seals are done, new intake is on. Should be fired back up in the next day or two.

car is running again, just need to rework the throttle linkage.

Carb is buggered, aside from that things went fine.

Nice work!

Thanks!

Pulled off the 750 AFB and replaced it with a 625 AFB with Chrysler linakage, ah much better! Car is actually starting to sound like it has some balls.

Tinkered with the timing a bit.

Replaced the front shocks.

Scrubbed the engine bay, pressure washed too.

Knocked a ding out of the drivers side inner fenderwell.

Changed the oil & filter after all the roaring around up and down the street for the past week.

Replaced the aftermarket heater control valve with the correct unit.

Pulled wiper motor a few days ago to replace linkage grommets, sandblasted and painted the wiper motor.

Dual exhaust next!
