One of my mopar buddies got in touch with me to remind me of the rickreal swap meet coming this Sunday. As we were talking about it, he mentioned that he has this buddy that is looking to get rid of a 1990 ryder box van with what he thinks is a 16' cab over style box 460 ford with automatic transmission. Said it is a running vehicle but needs a new gas tank out in. Said it was his brother's rig, but had passed away and it couldn't stay where it was anymore. Asked if I knew anyone interested in one. I have always wanted one to haul hay in the rainy season, swap meet set ups, toys, etc. Then he springs on me that it's free, I just have to move it 8 miles to get it home. So, I've got a tow company to meet me there on Tuesday to grab it up. I was thinking of it turns out to be a heap I could pop the box off and use it for storage, machine shop or whatever. Then my brother in law said, why not pop the back off and make a ramp truck. What do you guys think? Use it as intended, or make a storage out of the box and ramp truck the rest? I know its a van cab front so it would need closed off or a truck cab put on.

I would use it as it was designed. That much enclosed space is very nice to have in a hauling vehicle.

That's certainly the direction I am leaning towards. With all the projects going on it would be challenging to get a project like a ramp truck ever built probably. A ramp truck is just so darn cool to think about for sure.

How bout you reinforce the roof, so you can just pop a duster on top of it AND use it as intended ?

Caint beat a 460. THey sure don't pass many gas pumps, but dedgummit, they are great engines.

Those make GREAT go to the race track trucks. Lawn chairs and the grill on the roof.

Keep in mind, you get to pay commerical insurance on them in some states.

I will definitely have to look into the insurance part of it. I think if I run the "not for hire" sticker on the side of it and use it for private use only I should be good both registering st the DMV and my insurance company. But definitely need to verify that.

Pop some windows in it and you got an Oklahoma RV. Is it EFI? Gas could be done with a improvised fuel cell, aka gallon jug and a hose to the carb inlet.

I got the same big yellow rig from my job. Was purchased from ryder and used to carry construction tools and supplies around at work. Transmission was rebuilt and a couple weeks later the u joint let go and bent the driveshaft. Few weeks after that the rear axle starting making noise and locked up. Company pulIed the plug on it and I got it FREE. We hauled it with a 3/4 ton Chevy and pushed it on an 18 foot car hauler with a bulldozer. Took the backroads home since the whole operation was sketchy at best. I ended up parting it out. The EFI 460 and trans got sold for 1k and the box is used as a parts storage shed. The frame was given to the guy that hauled it all and he made a crazy trailer/car hauler from it. The walk up ramp that is stores under the box is solid aluminum and worth a decent amount at scrap.

I'm not positive if its EFI, I would guess with it being a 1990 it's got to be at least tbi. But yeah I was thinking about starting it off of a gas can and hose. Towing is cheap enough for the 8 miles I need to have it brought here. Definitely the cheaper option over getting a ticket for non current tags, registration or insurance for it. Though I could go down and get a $13 trip permit and insurance is just a phone call, and I could grab the battery out of the duster. I've got an 18' double axle tilt trailer with 12k winch, I just don't know if it will fit without the outside duals hanging off the sides. Which I guess isnt the worst scenario.

The old WWII Army camo paint scheme would be cool, too.

With the camo paint on there I could go incognito on the back roads, lol. Well maybe not, probably stick out even more. There is a guy around here that has a camo motorhome with a bunch of writing on the side saying he is a multiple time alien abductee, and to just ask him. I assumed he lives full time in it and its camo maybe in an attempt to hide from the future possibility of abductions.......if they are doing anal probes on him I cant say I blame him for that effort. I don't want to make fun of the guy, having spoken to him in the Walmart parking lot he definitely believes he has been taken. Who am I to say he hasn't had something screwed up happen to him.

Do what everyone else does. Paint it up and number it like your favorite NASCrap driver. Lol

Lord knows I see enough of these and old converted school buses pass by the house during NASCrap weekend.

I'd have to be a nascar fan first. I've never watched a single race more than a few minutes. Lol.
