Hey guys I like the debate thats going on as well, I have to admit I'm still not sure what I want. Though I am leaning towards the 273, only because it's the original motor. Well ok it will also give an reason to build another car with a 340, cause if you have one well two would be better right.
With the small displacement of the 273, how does it handle high RPM? I would think that it would like it.
You still need good rods, pistons great machine work if you want to live above 6500 for long. And then the valve train too needs work, at least solids with iron adjustables, good locks, and great springs and push rods. DONT go cheap on the oil system if you do a hi rev engine. Thre are a lot of mods that need to be done for the over 7000 rpm crowd.
It is the same stroke as a 318, 340. So same rules apply. But the lighter weight will get you there. That is why I like the Ross pistons, just they are pricy. Even in my stroker the balancing was minimal with these Ross forged pistons. I have seen a lot of mallory metal added to the crank on junky slugs.
They are all good, these small blocks, it is just that a stock 360 dollar for dollar with a little work is the most bang for the buck. I did it all with the 273, and regardless of what you do you will want more power and the cash will need to keep flowing right?
So I had fun, no real regets when I was young with the 273, but I could had a 360 or even a 318. Car aint a Barrett Jackson car so it does not really matter right if you keep the 273 in it? And I learned years latter not to get to sentimental over a engine.
But build it and it can and will run, boils dwn to time and money!
