273????

Hey guys I like the debate thats going on as well, I have to admit I'm still not sure what I want. Though I am leaning towards the 273, only because it's the original motor. Well ok it will also give an reason to build another car with a 340, cause if you have one well two would be better right.

With the small displacement of the 273, how does it handle high RPM? I would think that it would like it.

You still need good rods, pistons great machine work if you want to live above 6500 for long. And then the valve train too needs work, at least solids with iron adjustables, good locks, and great springs and push rods. DONT go cheap on the oil system if you do a hi rev engine. Thre are a lot of mods that need to be done for the over 7000 rpm crowd.

It is the same stroke as a 318, 340. So same rules apply. But the lighter weight will get you there. That is why I like the Ross pistons, just they are pricy. Even in my stroker the balancing was minimal with these Ross forged pistons. I have seen a lot of mallory metal added to the crank on junky slugs.

They are all good, these small blocks, it is just that a stock 360 dollar for dollar with a little work is the most bang for the buck. I did it all with the 273, and regardless of what you do you will want more power and the cash will need to keep flowing right?

So I had fun, no real regets when I was young with the 273, but I could had a 360 or even a 318. Car aint a Barrett Jackson car so it does not really matter right if you keep the 273 in it? And I learned years latter not to get to sentimental over a engine.

But build it and it can and will run, boils dwn to time and money!

I am looking at the 273 as it seems to be the engine that nobody does up, but as you guys have said it is not the easyest or cheapest engine to do. It is also the original engine but that is no big deal.

There is a 273 commando for sale on ebay right now would this be a better starting point than the 2brl, or are they pretty much the same engine?

Austin, by the time you get that engine shipped here, its gonna be spendy. They are pretty similar. Other than the pistons, most of a 4bbl 273 can be substituted into a 2bbl block and get just as much, if not more power, than an original 273 Commando engine.

If you have access to a cheap 360, that WILL get you the most bang-for-the-buck, but not nearly as neat as a 273 4bbl!

Just my opinion....

if i were you i would build the 340... its going to be cheeper and more parts avilable.. . you will be able to run a better (more dir and lift) cam ..better manifold.i think you said you also have a pair of j heads ,if so you could realy make some hp..use the 273 rockers .i use them on my race 360 moter no problems . the 904 will be ok..the only problems are no aftermarket shifter for the two cables...and the torque conveter will be trouble, because they used a smaller size input shaft..up to 66 ...Rick at A@Atrans can help you with that ...i run a 64 904 trans in my 64 360 dart race car.. using 64 65 consol floor shifter.a late model in put /reacter asysm a with 5 clutch front drum and 5clutch rear drum all from A@A NO PROBLEMS a 4200 stall convertor from dynamic...12.3 ALL DAY A1.69 60FT A@A number 317 831 3066 dynamic number 877 846 5876 good luck

and I suppose that 340's grow on trees? Last time i looked to get a rebuildable 340 long block you can look to pay in the $1500 range

Not a problem. I like the Canadian Valliants too!

The 273 4bbl handles high rpm just fine. It winds up quick.

I had a very difficult time getting all of the pieces, when I did this car. Now all of the pieces are available in repro. The 273 4 bbl exhaust has the coolest sound this side of a race engine. In essence it is a single exhaust with a glasspack and a straight through resonator on the end.

This is for the member with the 273 that wanted to know what a 4 barrel piston looked like

IMHO one of the sweetest sounding factory exhausts ever built!

I'm all about originality. I've gotta' have that Hypo exhaust! toolman

Hi guys/gals

Well I'm finaly getting to the point where I can start on my 65 Valiant, the apprenticship is done and the bills are almost all payed off.

So I now have a couple of questions.

I was thinking of doing some work to my 273 to make it more like the comando motor. Though I have heard that to put a 4brl in take on the 65 LA motor it's a one year only is this true?

Then what was the difference inthe heads on a comando and the regular 273?

Now to through a hole wrench into things I have a set of 340 J heads as well. I was thinking of using these, is there any advantage to these heads or would they be to much for a 273?

And last I do have a line on a 340 should I just bag the 273 and go to the 340?

Thank you guys/gals for all your Imput

Austin

Here's some pics of that 273 that is for sale in the Reno area. As you can see it's still in that e body. If it's a runner it would be worth the trip. I'm not going to be down that way for several months or I would snag it
