318 cam

Save your money and get the Hughes Whiplash cam and support parts.
Can be used with stock convertor and gears, will increase cylinder pressure thus increasing low speed torque and power throughout the range.
Why redevelop the wheel, Hughes has already done so.

I have heard in my travels that, with a LA 318 the stock cam is best in terms of economy reliability and power. Stock lift on an LA 318 cam is below .400" I know most wont want to accept that but , I'd bet there is something to it. Without heads, ( and I don't mean ported stock 318 heads, I mean upgrading to a 340 style head with the large ports. ) there really is no need to cam a 318 but that's just my $.02.
Still can’t figure out the 318 is the nearly the same as a 340? A 318 responds to a cam as any motor near the same cu in. Horsepower is related to airflow through the heads. It does not matter what size the ports are, just how much they flow. You can get there with 340 heads, ported heads, Magnum heads, aftermarket heads. It all boils down to what you want and the combination to get there. In this thread people have given combinations that will get you 340 horsepower and time slips.

There's a fella on YT that took a 318 bottom end to it's limits and the crank broke. For you uncle Tony fans who may remember, Tony with his lack of anything in the way of automotive knowledge and intellect, made a video on the Gary fellas. video stating it was a timing chain failure, but he was once again wrong and making up stories. The point is, evidence is out there about what happens when you try and make a 318 into a race engine...you can only take it so far.
Let's not go there.

No it is not nearly the same as a 340 that is misinformation. The only commonality is crank dimension and appearance. It is not a good base or a performance build. How far did David Vizard and Charles Sevedio get with their performance 318 build...? Just food for thought... trying to mak e a 318 into a 340 is impossible... many have tried.

Easy 300 - 325 Horse Power >

And then the Stock Build '69 9.2:1 cr 318 was built.

Still running strong 4 years later, proof is in the pudding.

Disagree all you want all you would have to do is disassemble both engines 318, and 340 side by side ancd compare internals. the 340 block? different , 340 heads? different, the 340 crank? different, 340 cam? different, valvetrain? different rods? different pistons? different bore, different, ...you get the idea. 318 guys always have to act like they have something special, but its not... a common run of the mill utility engine is all it really is... Its been said thousands of times before at least with the 360 you'll get the beefier bottom end and the head castings... :)

Other than pistons all the parts are interchangeable so it ultimately it just comes down to bore size. 3.91 bore is big enough to make the hp the average dude wants, not saying a 4" or 4.04" plus wouldn't better or a 4.185"-4.34" plus isn't even better.

Most of this 318 can't strawman argument is ridiculous, I'd say the vast majority of people building a 318 just wants a mild hop up, usually just wanting to add cam 4bbl headers to a running engine. To act like these people are wanting to do something that's bordering on the impossible is insane and for the few wanting to build a 318 full of aftermarket goodies it's ridiculous to think it can't perform. Is it's worthwhile that's for the OP's to decide.

Go tell Hensley Motorsports in Tennessee you cannot make a 340 out of a 318. They'll laugh your stupid butt right out of their shop. They've been doing it over thirty years.

The poor 318 gets the same respect as the lowly 383. lol
I ran mid 11's with a lowly 383 in the early 80's. lol
I could probably build a lowly 318 to run the same with today's available parts, easily. lol

I have to come back to this and admit I'm always complimented at all the cruise ins by the Chevy and Ford and "other make" guys. It's the Mopar guys that always ask why I want to mess with "THAT". Both in person and on here. Mopar guys bash um more than everyone else combined. 318s, too.

Or a 273 guy. It's always a comment about should have built a 360, why not a Magnum or Gen 3 Hemi. No one has mentioned a Elephant motor. If I wanted one of those I would have built one.

I've seen it first hand on just about every single 273 thread. Why caint people just leave others alone and let them play with what they want to?

I don't give them crap because they built a 500 horse 415 stroker for their Swinger and now they are complaining about no traction or it's too radical to drive with the 4:88's and I have to trailer it everywhere and my dually and enclosed trailer only get's 5 mpg and Diesel is X.xx per gallon and now that's somebody else's fault. F**k that.

Or the one problem we see ALL THE TIME......"my car runs hot blah blah blah......" and THEN they won't listen to any suggestions. Which is why I wave goodbye by saying "my car runs great!" lol

Having a hard time getting the answer I’m looking for, so I’m going to try this again. I’m building a LA 318 out of a 74 satellite with the most amount of stock parts and cheap mods as possible. I’m new to all this and I don’t have a lot of money to work with . I want to put a cam in this engine and I found a cheap cam on summit racing with 285 duration and 480 lift. What mods will have to be done to make this work? Thank you in advance. Summit Racing SUM-1798 Summit Racing™ Camshafts | Summit Racing this is the cam I’m thinking about getting.
Only going off of the very little information you have given us, I don't like that cam for your engine.
I have no cam recommendation because I don't know your gears, converter, exhaust system, intended use of the vehicle, and what "most amount of stock parts and cheap mods" means to you.

Bone stock 79 318. Hughes whiplash 340 cam. Stock heads stock bottom end. Stock convertor Stock valve springs. Stock 727, 3.91 gears cam and intake. Screams even without water for 20 minutes and coulda went longer but pulled off the win in that time..
