340 if you can find and afford it. 360 if you are on a budget. Just say no to the slant six idea.
ROTFLMAO
Boy there certainly are some touchy 360 guys in here.
The 360 is a good little motor. Plenty of them out there and cheap. You can spend a little bit of $ to make them go a little bit faster or you can spend a lot more $$ to make 'em go a lot more faster if that's what you want to do.
In all of my Mopar days, most gearheads have expressed an appreciation for a 340 car with a genuine 340 motor in it. Yes, you can dress up something else to look like a 340 but it is still not a 340. That's why an "idiot" sometimes asks the question. It is just for the "cool" factor.
I bought my genuine 1971 340 Duster with intention of pulling the 318 that now resides in the engine bay and stabbing in a 5.7 Hemi. I have had a lot of requests by my gearhead friends to find a 340 and put it in so the the car is "complete" or "cool". Not one of them said "hey! Stab a 360 in it." They all said something to the affect of "you can put a 5.7 or a 360 in anything but a 340 car should have a 340 in it."
So, please calm down you 360ers. You have a fast motor. Be happy!
...The look on the "idiots" face when I tell him "No, it has a 408 in it" should be worth the price of admission alone!!!
I'm going to sell the 340 that's in my dart and use the proceeds towards my stroked 360. The look on the "idiots" face when I tell him "No, it has a 408 in it" should be worth the price of admission alone!!!
OK, we can go with that....6 of 1 half dozen of another....You mean a shiatvrolet, bite your tongue.

Actually for 2k you get a motor just as fast as a V8 that actually has something unique about it and isn't some pos honda motor. When you pop the hood people don't say "another sbm" they say "wow! Slant 6!" and further more you get to see the look on the v8 guys face when your slant stomps there 360...lol. for an extra 2K i want something faster not "just as fast".
hell take a long time to get that 2K back in gas mileage.
and you would still have to deal with that awful fart sound coming from that slannty. may as well go get a honda and get really good mileage..

Now lets look at gass milage. Getting 20 mpg. Your car uses 5 gallons of gas in 100 miles. Now look at the V8, 100 miles at 15 mpg uses 6.667 gallons of gas. Gas in NC is $3.57 a gallon. So in 100 miles you save $5.95. In 33,600 miles, you just saved $2,000. Say gas goes up to $4 a gallon (only a matter of time), the slant saves $6.68 per 100 miles. Sudenly you saved your $2,000 dollars in 29,900 miles. If you car is your daily driver like me then your putting somewhere in the neighborhood of 10K miles a year on your car. So in three years time, your slant pays for itself. Now if your like me and you take frequent roadtrips in your car and rack up 25K miles a year, your slant has paid for itself in just over a year.

Yeah cause I started off with an avg. of 22. 7 years, 50k miles later with a couple jets and one electronic ignition upgrade, I'm averaging 20... Good thing I'm not full of ****, I'm already full of hot air! :toothy7:and i'm sure that slantty didn't get 20 mpg right off the bat either. took some tuning and if you say any different your full of ****.
