340 vs. 360

-
Well Mike, for me, it's like this;

Why spend the extra money on a 340 block when the 360 is cheaper, in J-yards?
For a street strip engine, I think a 360 is a no-brainer. Heres why;
1 Like said, cheap junk yard finds.
2 Some are roller cammed blocks.
3 The longer stroke is an advantage because it produces more torque down low. It also brings in peak power and torque sooner because of it. The heavier street car can use this to it's advantage due to it's extra heft.
4 If you wish to internally balance the engine, you can. Parts like the flywheel/torque converter and damper are an easy get.
Though theres no huge advantage to having the engine internally balanced for such an engine, it does make converter changes easier. The cost is minimal and off the shelf.

thanks guys!!!

well ron,
i had to sell my 340 out of my duster to do somethings around the house and with the money left over,i want to either buy a complete built CHEAP motor,buy a built shortblock or buy parts to build another motor....thats why i was asking about the 340 vs. 360.

im KIND of anal cuz i have a 340 stripe on my car id like to do another 340 but i may not.

No one would ever know the difference unless they crawled under the car, which may lead to death buy gun or burnout in my book.

Mike if you get in a jam let me know. My brother has alot of 360 parts and we could probably help you out if you go with a 360. I know he don't have much 340 stuff anymore. Ron

If you build it to spin,*cough $$$$$ cough* then it'll spin. Theres some short comings to the 360 for strip use. Just remember that the extra stroke brings peak torque and HP a few hundered RPM sooner.

1. Short comings are the longer stroke which would require stiffer springs to attain the same RPM
2. Longer stroke equals faster piston speeds.
3. Larger bearing surface. This is drag.
4. Stock cast crank limits big, and I mean big HP. Not what I would call street strip power, buy hey, what ever spins your tires and makes your gears mesh....
If you have 4.56's now and intend on keeping them, a larger tire may be inorder. Maybe 2 inchs.

I really do not know what to say on tire size. It's all part of the package. Cam converter gear weight the amount of peanuts you eat with the beer you drank last night. etc..........

Looking for better than 550 HP huh? Fully ported heads etc.......
Forgot, 360's have pressed pins.
So long as the bottom gets done right and the springs do there job, you'll run.

The con rod is heated up on the small end to expand it some, then the piston and pin are installed very quickly so when the rod cools, it contracs over the pin keeping right where it's set.
You want more than 550 HP with that combo. Otherwise everthing there IMO is a waste of time to bother with.
Big stall, big tires big cam. All for what? You got it all there with a decent comp ratio for the HP hunt. The only thing I see missing is a set of ported heads.

Wait....your playin me... :drinkers: :notworth: :thumblef:

I re-looked to see. 6500 with the 340. If you moved your parts over from the 340 to the 360 (Yes I know the 340's gone) you would cross a few hundered rpms less. Thats if you can make the torque work in your favor early at the line.
