I'm in the process of swapping the 65 273/904 in my 65 Valiant for a 73 low mi. 360 that came with a 727. From what I've learned I would be better off with a 904 rather than using the 727. My question is what year 904 trans. should I be looking for to use with the 73 360? I don't want any balance issues. Thanks, Litz

Balance problem isn't the trans. It will be the converter. A b&m flexplate will do the trick.

Somewhere in the late 60's they changed the spline count on the 904. Look for a 70-up 904 and you'll be good to go

Are you keeping the 65 904? If so use the B & M flexplate and the bushing that goes in the 360 crank pocket for the smaller snout in your 65 converter. If swapping out your 65 904, try to use a 68-up so you don't have to use the bushing

Thanks for the info. I wonder if anyone would be interested in my 65 cable shifted 904 complete with console?

By 71 most of the desireable upgrades were done to the 904, so any 71 up is good. I think almost all the 904 TCs were low stalls tho, so depending on the cam in the 360, that might be a sticking point. Lo-stalls were around 1750 with 2bbl teeners.
But since you already have a 904........

727_fig2.jpg Be careful about going to the much newer 904's. They started going to lock-up converters in the late '70's. Older converters don't interchange with those. They can be recognized by a smooth, machined tip on the shaft.

Nothing really wrong with lock-up set ups. But it's not performance oriented and converter options are very limited. Good thing is that they also started going to the 2.74 low gear sets. But I don't know if all lock-ups had them or how to tell unless you disassemble it & know what to look for.

How could I find out which year they switched to lock-up converters? I have a good 1973 727 but want to use a 904.
