'383 Magnum' ~ What was the Street Talk

-
Thx Mr Tim San !!!

Perusing this thread (& others) 'cause I know 'zip' about the B & RB platforms...

By way of ... mmmm ... context, I spent 2k$ on a 273 in '69,
wiped the floor against some Big Block builds, ...

That being said,
I also had My arse "handed to Me on a platter " ( read 4+ car length losses) by
383 'turd engine' powered platforms numerous times.

Apologies to the O/P,
'383 Magnum' ~ What was the Street Talk.

Back then we didn't cotton much to street talk, --- The Iron Never Lies ---
Talking stock builds , 2000 back in the day was a ton o money , with that could get a 225 slant kicking *** . 900 bought me a new built 440 from a bankrupt race shop back then , was putting out over 500 hp

No '383 Magnum' for you.

1968 and 1969 Dodge Charger.

Despite popular belief, these Dodge Charger's were not good enough to get the
'383 Magnum'.

It was too powerful for the Coke-Bottle design of the Charger.

I will say it again for all you 340 lovers. IN 1979 my 67 fastback with 1968 383 magnum with torqueflight and 4.56 gear would waste most takers from light to light, including ALL 340'S. the 383 I run now is a total different beast. so now I won't waste my time on a 340. I would just breakout the ole 65 440 powered 1/2 ton .
the 340 is a good engine, but it has it's place and needs some space. lmao

You needed 4.56's to get that fastback 383 moving huh?

The ol' 383 was fighting the battles in the trenches. The 383 was a cheap durable engine that responded well to bolt on upgrades. It's one of the biggest factors in Mopars street cred back in the muscle car war days

The 343 HP dual quad 383 was a terror to be deal with in its class in drag racing. They were total badassary.

That is absolutely correct.

But, Automatics 'only' in the 1962 Plymouth and Dodge were the winners.
* 300 'J' Cylinder Heads
* Dual-Quad In-Line Intake
* Twin Carter AFB's
* Solid Lifter Camshaft {Clay Smith}

They were dominant 'Stockers'.

Stock 383 69 formula s beats stock 69 340 formula s, same transmission and gearing.

I can't remember if you've done this race yet?

I think we should put together a Match Race.

1969 Barracuda Fastback

* 383/330 HP
* 340/275 HP

1969 NHRA Stock Classes
The 383/330 HP was classed in E/S or E/SA {9.50 to 9.99 Wt/HP}
The 340/275 HP was classed in F/S or F/SA {10.00 to 10.49 Wt/HP}

As we all know, the 340/275 HP was re-factored to 310 HP by the NHRA.

And i will say it AGAIN i NEVER lost to any "taxi-cab" 383 motor with a 340,and i certainly didn't need 4.56s to do it..

I wouldn't mind having a '69 Cuda with either engine! :)

Looking forward to the "Match Race..."

A 340 a-body should beat a 383 b-body most of the time depending on transmission, gearing, driver etc. You ever race a 383 a-body?

This is going to be a great thread for my reading. I will be setting a 383 in my Coronet. It is an already rebuilt runner, so all the little bolt on secrets will be handy. The deepest I will be going into the inside may be a "Road Runner" cam.

well then, I guess you never did the stop light thing. lol my guess I'd put 3- 4 lengths on you out the gate. lol or I would have just used the truck.

Back-in-the-Day

Yes we had one in our Racing Group, and built it for Stock Class.

1969 Fastback ~ 383/330 HP ~ cuda' 383

Back in 1970 and 1971, classed in F/SA {9.50 to 9.99 Wt/HP}

It did OK in Class, but was eventually torched by a couple of 440 Mopars {GTX and R/T}
and a 1968 395/350 HP Nova SS.

The 1969 383/330 HP wasn't the best combination to run back in the day
in the {9.50 to 9.99 Wt/Hp} Stock Class.

Stop light thing many times when i was young and foolish with a 340..now i spank the "taxi cab 383's" at the track with a lowly 360:D:D:D

This is so true!

I wasn't around back then. ( born in 1969) But what I've heard from the people in those times were.

440 was only in high end cars (Charger R/T, Coronet R/T and GTX).
HEMI if ONE was in your town you were lucky and only if the person knew how to tune it.
So the 383 was the major motor of choice for the street. Yes a 340 A body was a great screamer no argument there. But the 383 was the one fighting it out on the street. ( 84,000 69 Road Runners and most were 383).

So go ahead and bash the 383 but I don't remember seeing a 340 running pro stock or top fuel, unless I've missed something.

LONG LIVE THE BIG BLOCK!!!!!!
