408 Build Thread

-
Just caught up on the thread. Numbers are looking good Brian! Looking forward to seeing it.
It's uncanny to me how similar you 408 sounds to mine, I'll try to post a video of mine. Builds are fairly similar, IIRC your cam is .292 .501" lift? Mine is .236 .574" lift so that seems to be the only major difference to me outside of the carbs, you have 800 I have 950cfm. Both low 10:1 compression, both TTI, both Edbr heads. My biggest interest to your build relative to your numbers is did you go solid lifters or hyd lifters? You spun a few hundred more RPM out of yours getting you to 500hp/ftlbs, I fell just short at 489 each and spun to only 6000 on the engine dyno. Dyno guy and engine builder both agree I would most likely get another 300-500rpm out of solid lifters.

I am using Melling replacement hydraulic roller lifters that I picked up cheap on eBay. I'm also running 1.5:1 roller rockers. We built the engine for repliability vs. a max performance effort. So far, it's been dead nuts reliable and makes the power that we were looking for.

I used MP hyrdaulic lifters and also the 1.5 rockers Scorpion, I thought I went wish the 1.6 but my parts list show part number for 1.5, I need to ask builder if he put 1.6 in. While there is potential power gain from that difference there is reliability trade off?

Man it really sounds like we have extremely similar builds. I did a half fill block as well.

Oh and just a tip I got from my builder, he advised me to use BND Automotive ACES 4 fuel additive, he said it will add 400-600% life to the cylinder walls and rings. Using HP forged pistons usually or always require thinner rings, so they can wear very fast according to him. I'm not as educated on some of this so I go with what "my guy" tells me.

Anyway Brian I am anxious to hear what number you turn if you take it to track.

Link didn't work? Wanted me to join a FB group.

I guess I wasn't clear enough, the 1.5 ratio arms weren't used for reliability, it just came out that way. Send me a PM if you have any more questions or comments about your build? Thanks.

What will your car weigh full when completed?

From one page back.

I also ran the car by some truck scales on the way home and it weighed in at 3400 lbs. That's about what I expected with the Dana rear and full interior with sound deadener.

Old dead threads are getting deleted here so I thought I'd better update mine to keep it alive. I've been enjoying the car and driving it every chance I get. I still have a list of things that need to be done to it, but it's a project and will probably never be completely done. Mostly just little projects, but I still need to get some tail pipes on it and that involves messing with the park brake cables and possibly having them shortened. I've been accumulating parts again and I have new reproduction tail lights and harness to install (finally will have reverse lights), a matte black tail stripe and misc odds and ends that have needed to be done for a while now, but I've been having to much fun driving it!

It's been a long cold winter here in the midwest and I've had two different surgeries since October, but my health is good now and hopefully the weather will break some time soon? They are building a brand new drag strip thirty minutes from here that is scheduled to open mid July. Hopefully we'll be regulars there on test and tune night and I can finally get some quarter mile numbers on this thing.

Please post a few images when you get the car back on the road!
The car has been on the road for a couple of years now. Here's some pics from last summer.

Where’s the new drag strip? They re-opened Mid-America in the fall of last year of you didn’t know (even further than Kansas International for you unfortunately). The have completely resurfaced the entire track, updated facilities, going to be a real nice place I think and definitely intend on hitting it up some more this year.

Where’s the new drag strip?

The guy who invested millions into Heartland Park in Topeka is doing the same with I-70 Speedway in Odessa, MO. They are turning the 3/8 mile asphalt track into a dirt track which opens in early May and then they are building a brand new NHRA sanctioned 1/4 mile track on the same property which is supposed to open some time in July. We plan on going out to the first dirt event just so that we can scope out the progress on the drag strip.

Sounds sweet! Maybe me and a buddy or two will come test it out once they get it built!

Just posting to keep the thread fresh and glad I found it again. Thanks for documenting your journey and all the specifics. Very close to my build, same cam/compression just Magnum heads and EFI and pistons out of the hole a tad. Hopefully dropping my 408 in my Demon soon. Been 2 years after divorce and dust finally settled.

Thanks! I pay 99 cents a month to Photobucket to keep the pictures up. Glad someone was able to get some use out of the thread.

I've not been doing much with the Dart because of the lockdown. I did get it out the other day and just drove it. Topped off the gas and blew a layer of dust off of it. I'm ready to go to cruises as soon as they give us the all-clear signal. Really starting to get cabin fever.

FANTASTIC looking car! Congrats for that. Like many on here, I've got a 408 nearly done that will be going into my 72 Demon. Were you ever able to get your car to the track to get some numbers from it?
