Okay the plan is coming together and I think I've settled on a few decisions for this upcoming build. My 70 Duster will indeed be a 5.7 Hemi swap and I'm pretty settled on using my A833 tranny and EZ EFI fuel delivery. And, I'm wanting to use the RMS coil over front and rear suspension.

So here are my questions; I am unclear if I will be able to use the street handleing setup with power steering and I am also unclear if there is a good solution for headers or exhaust manifolds. Does anyone have insight on either of these two concerns?

When I get started I will put the whole list together and post pictures along the way. I am getting excited, just gotta get this Bug finished for the wife first :angel2:

Well i have a 5.7 in my 70 Duster but with a stock k-frame,You don't have many choices as far as headers go,TTi is about all who makes them unless u can fit something in there from a Doge charger application,You also will need to call Rms about the power steering because with a stock k-frame you have no power steering options, UNLESS unisteer would finally build a power rack system for us A body owners--Steve

The alterktion with power steering frees up a ton of room over the factory k member. I suggest a rear sump truck pan and the 6.1 srt8 jeep exhaust manifolds. It's an easy fit with the rack and pinion. I don't have an alterktion, so I'll let someone with one with a hemi installed confirm all this for you. I did however sell a couple sets of those headers and one of those pans to alterktion guys...

Yes, you can have power rack and pinion steering with the Alter-k-tion and the 5.7L, 6.1L or 6.4L Hemi.

The reason you can't have power steering with the STOCK K-Frame is that the factory power steering box is much larger than the manual box and comes too close to the exhaust ports on the head. There is simply not enough room for between the exhaust port and the steering box for either a header or an exhaust manifold.

With power rack and pinion the rack is only slightly larger and sits in front of the engine. Note, the Alter-k-tion uses front steering. Thus, there is no interference between the exhaust ports and the steering.

Your choices for exhaust manifolds on the 5.7 are: You can use the manifolds off of the 6.1L SRT8 Jeep Cherokee, or 5.7 exhaust manifolds off the same. Or you can use TTI headers. Please Note: You have to order the headers SPECIFICALLY from TTI for the Alter-k-tion, as the tubes are in a slightly different position to allow for the steering linkage to reach the rack and pinion. Thus, you'll want to think through your plans carefully so you don't end up buying the wrong headers. Also note, the Jeep 5.7 exhaust manifolds will work with a stock K-frame and manual steering but the 6.1 exhaust manifolds WON'T!.

Hope this helps,

Another note, if the 5.7 hemi you buy comes out of a car you can use the car power steering pump with the rack and pinion from RMS. It creates a very clean installation. Though you do have to do some trimming to the frame rail to get the alternator to fit. See pic below.

The SRT Jeep manifolds hug the block nicely and will work with the alterkation

What I am unsure abot is the clearence for running the clutch rods.
As was said to save a few bucks you can run the truck oil pan and pick up tube. Some choose not to because it hangs lower than some of the aftermarket ones I believe.
If you are going to run the Jeep manifolds you will need an 05 up mini starter. That puts the solenoid directly on top of the starter and not slightly to the side like the earlier ones. The manifolds fit to tigh against the block for those to fit.

Joe, I am using one from an 04 Durango, Will that pump work also? I thought I had read that the truck Hemis had fewer accessory fit issues.

Im running a truck motor (RAM) and I don't have any problems with the accessories. The alternator sits higher so no need to trim the frame rail. But I'm running a stock k frame and there is barely room for the manual steering box.

My conversion is from a 08 durango but I bought a 300c front timing cover so the alternator is not the first thing you see when u look at the motor ,I know on my install i did not have to do any trimming on the frame to get the car timing cover to work,I also used the tti engine mounts with the power lock Schumaker pads,THE ENGINE DOES NOT MOVE EVEN A 1/4 inch under load,

Joe....will the 5.7 Jeep manifolds fit an A body without whackin a big chunk out of the passenger side frame rail?

According to Hot Rod Magazine: They require a bit of grinding but nothing significant. Here's a link to the article:

Truck accessories fit better as they ride up on top of the engine not down low like the cars. As far as the pump goes, you'd have to contact Bill from RMS to see. I know he sells and or includes a an adapter that allows for the car pumps to work, basically lowering the line pressure to work with his rack. My pure speculation is that the truck pump would work.

My SRT8 Jeep manifolds would NOT fit with the RMS driver's side motor mount, they fit everything else very nicely, but I had to fab up a new driver's side mount for it to fit. I believe RMS uses the Ram manifolds in their conversions.

This whole thread points to questions RMS should be able to answer for the price you pay for the set-up,They should be able to answer any and ALL of these questions--Thanks
